For the Summer ‘The Lights, Camera, Action’ issue, i-D magazine talks to British designer Margaret Howell about her second line, MHL, the first time she has spoken about the popular label. “I design for people who need to feel relaxed in what they’re wearing, not self-conscious or uptight. I love that relaxed attitude.” Additionally, working with creative director Terry Jones and photographer Kayt Jones, the collaborators have produced four short films alongside a series of portraits featuring creatives wearing the line. Below, we hear from Actress and UCLA student, Caitlin Gerard wearing MHL very well indeed. Head back in time to see our MHL East Store Visit.

Arena Homme+ give the stetson a run out in this ‘Cowboys, Rangers, Bulls’ editorial for Spring/Summer 2012. Using the iconic hat and boot combination for artistic affect rather than fashion suggestion (we hope), an interesting story that makes much use of light, shadow and projection backdrops. With clothing from the likes of Raf Simons, Jil Sander, Margaret Howell, Comme des Garcons and a strong American showing from Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hifiger and Calvin Klein – one to wave you Stars n’ Stripes at. The ‘Margaret Howell Plus’ series sees the British label collaborate with a designer from another field to create a single shirt. Previous contributors included Kenneth Grange and Sam Hecht, better known as product and industrial designers and for her third effort she has chosen garden and landscape designer Dan Pearson.
Going with a more natural feel, they chose undyed linen from Spence Bryson in Northern Ireland and West Midlands Horn buttons, both products known for irregularities in texture. Featuring two large breast pockets, inverted back pleat, hanging tab and large cuff gussets, the shirt is designed for ease of movement and functionality – perfect for the gardener who likes to keep it stylish on the lawn. Follow us as we step through the doors of MHL’s first London store, located on Old Nichol Street and yet another addition to the Redchurch street massive. Margaret Howell has always kept the utilitarian label on a relatively low exposure level. As with the mainline, fiercely protecting the brand has created a continuous buzz and sense of exclusivity, both of which have kept her legion of loyal followers faithful to this British fashion institution. The space is very much in line with MHL and Margaret Howell stores worldwide. As you’d expect light, wood, simple fixtures and a sense of space are the preferred look.
Placing the clothing at the centre of attention, there’s very little to distract from what MHL does best – creating the kind of gear you’d happily fill your wardrobe with and wear for the rest of your days. The Spring/Summer 2012 collection had just dropped when we paid a visit, even more reason to take the tour.

It’s difficult not to use the word classic when it comes to Margaret Howell but with yet another spot on collection paying little attention to prevailing trends, it seems the most apt description. If you like single breasted trench coats, relaxed knitwear, simple shirting and various other staples in muted tones then you’ll do well to keep an eye on Margaret Howell season after season.
