MHL Khaki Pocket Raincoat

Choosing great pieces from a Margaret Howell collection isn’t the hardest of tasks, but here’s one we’ve especially taken to. We’ve been obsessed with raincoats for the last few months but we haven’t started getting the snarky comments we get on Springcourts and desert boots*, so we’re gonna keep on trucking. We don’t really have much to say about this piece really – it looks good, it’ll keep your head dry, what more would you want from a coat? (South Willard)

Margaret Howell Linen Shirt

Selectism - margaret-howell-mint-green-shirt

Sale seasons leads to some odd opportunities. Despite all this Autumn/Winter previews, summer’s gonna be around for at least another month or so (that pesky month called August just started). So you’re gonna need a couple more lightweight shirts – so why not get one like this Margaret Howell linen number? It’s in mint green, it’s got the most subtle polka dots this side of Kwame and it’s on sale (only a small left, mind). What else do you need? (Margaret Howell)

MHL Navy Work Shorts

Selectism - mhl-work-shorts

Here’s another sale pick. These MHL shorts have gone on sale at South Willard (now $138, previously $230) and they’re yet another relative bargain. Bargains aside, these are the sort of shorts that are worth spending a little money on, even if your summer is only three weeks long. You won’t regret it a few years down the line, when your H&M shorts have long since disintegrated. (South Willard)

MHL by Margaret Howell Duffle Coat

18 March 2010, 11.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

Selectism - margaret-howell-mhl-duffle-coat-01Forgive us, we’re currently in the middle of a spring duffle binge. After showing you that Soulland version yesterday, here’s a Margaret Howell version (from her MHL diffusion line) to further whet your appetites. The MHL collection had a great duffle last season, but it was on available in a pretty boring dark charcoal shade. We’re much more partial to this natural colour, aside from just being handsome, it also neatly helps people avoid that ‘indigo jumpsuit’ look – an unfortunate side effect of wearing a navy coat with indigo denim. (Margaret Howell)

Take a leap to see another shot of this coat.

Margaret Howell MHL Corduroy Staff Jacket

02 November 2009, 11.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

selectism - mhl-cord-staff-jacket

While we’re still not 100% on corduroy suits – the 70’s vibe is a little hard for us to let go of – we can co-sign a cord jacket. This one, by Margaret Howell’s diffusion line MHL, is sharp enough to be worn as a blazer to a semi-formal function – note the breast pocket, perfect for getting your mad men on. We know it’s sartorial sacrilege recommending contrasting corduroys, but it’d go pretty well with some tan cord trousers. If you’re gonna go cord on cord, just remember to wear trainers – shoes can tip this into ‘biting your grandad’s style’ territory. (Margaret Howell)

Margaret Howell Crewneck Jumper

14 September 2009, 13.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

selectism - margaret-howell-crewneck-jumper-01While we liked the look of Nom De Guerre’s sweaters, we can’t support a £165 piece that’s 20% nylon. If you had to go for one crewneck this season, we’d recommend this one. It’s by Margaret Howell – so quality is all but guaranteed – and the fabric blend is a luxurious merino wool and cashmere. As a wise man once said, ‘who needs nylon when you’ve got cashmere?’  (The Bureau)

Detailed shots are after the leap.

Now that skinny ties have ‘jumped the shark’ so to say, it’s time to start looking at alternatives. If you don’t think bow ties are for you, then knitted ties are a good halfway house. These Margaret Howell knitted ties have a mini-check pattern that’s invisible from any kind of distance and the colours available would work well with any number of outfits. Get it from Margaret Howell.

If you’re looking to hop on the rucksack bandwagon that’s set to explode this coming autumn/winter, this is the bag for you. This Margaret Howell rucksack is the perfect size for a day bag when you’ll need to carry a few items for a day out and about. The only problem with this bag is that some might say it’s a little dull, but for those who just want a good quality bag that matches most of their outfits, this will be the bag for them. Get it from Margaret Howell.

Openers | Margaret Howell Autumn/Winter 2008

Openers Japan continues their designer showcases with Margaret Howell’s collection for Autumn/Winter 2008. Ms. Howell harself pens a great essay on her “Design Philosophy.”

I consider myself as a designer who designs clothes as compared to the definition ‘Fashion Designer’. I believe a Fashion Designer begins with a concept for a show to convey a statement or story whereas I design a one off product, which is function led and designed for retail. The clothes do encompass an element of current trend but largely it is one’s own style that remains constant.”

The Openers piece also includes a video interview with Ms. Howell entitled, WHITE SHIRT as well as a walkthrough of her Autumn/Winter 2008 collection and special edition works.
