selectism - Furni Lowtop Moccasins

Furni continues to play with traditional Canadian footwear this summer. You might remember their fine attempts to “Rock the Moc,” in the form of two “Rockassins.” The Canadian design firm is keeping things a touch simpler this go round, offering two lowtop mocs – one in caramel and one in black – both traditionally constructed.

Furni is taking orders for these beauties through August 4, 2011.

If you are going to wear moccasins, make sure that they are authentic.

Made in Quebec City, Canada by Laurentian Chief, the Raised by Wolves moccasins are as authentic as you’ll find. Following traditional First Nations manufacturing techniques, the shoes are constructed of soft, yet durable Canadian cowhide suede, with a thin crepe sole, branded (as in stamped with hot metal) leather footbed, zig-zag pattern collar and contrast brown leather laces and stitching.

Pre-order direct from Raised by Wolves (by June 15, 2011) and coordinate for a July delivery. Available in men’s sizes 6-13.

Detailed looks at the moccasins follow.

Native Craftworks Moccasins

Native Craftworks Moccasins

For those looking for a creepe sole alternative to the Clark Weaver, look above to England’s Native Craftworks. “Based in England, they set about bringing together the best components from around the world and the end result is mightily impressive. Native Craftworks boast of shoes made in the right way, not the cheapest or the quickest. It’s music to the ears of shoe obsessives the world over. Their extensive search for the ideal crepe took them to a plantation in Sri Lanka, where they discovered the strongest and comfiest combination to make up the sole. This provides ample support and is the ideal base for their custom made leathers and suedes.” Oi Polloi has them.

Lazy Mountain Quarter Boot Moccasins

Ron Potvin and Normand Gauthier, head designers at Lazy Montain Moccasin, bring us their rendition of the moccasin boot. Potvin and Gauthier have been trained in the art of handsewing since the early 1980s and only till 2010 did they begin their quest to become the best moccasin manufacturers in the world. The “Quarter Boot Moccasin” has “four eyeties with brass or nickle eyelets that are made of durable waxhide full grain leather.” The chrome leather sole comes with a 5/16 inch foam rubber and an 1/8 inch foam rubber and leather sock lining. The boot comes lined or unlined as a feature so you can decide upon purchase. A great option to the many other United States moccasin companies. The boot is available at LazyMountainMoccasin.

Selectism - OeTZI3300 Moccasins for Summer 2010

“Oetzi” is one of those prehistoric gents that got on with his life during some of the toughest days this World has ever seen. With “Oetzi” in mind, OeTZI3000, the footwear brand has emerged with the idea of keeping the bare essentials in mind. Their moccasins for Summer 2010 look to follow that ethos. Their simple form and finish with a tech sole sure do make them look awfully comfortable. Hopefully I’ll have a chance to sample them myself soon.

Oi Polloi Moccasins

Check out this set of hand crafted moccasins from Oi Polloi. The crepe sole makes the ride on these incredibly soft. “Made from extra heavy, quality Swiss hides that are tanned in England by a small, family owned tannery. Using a process that no one in the world has been able to duplicate, the fibers of the leather are tightly joined, yet are pliable enough to allow the leather to mould to your feet and breathe.”

Aquascutum Moccasins

aquascutum moccasins Aquascutum Moccasins

Aquascutum are typically a very stern, very British brand. Their pieces might show one or two flashes of flamboyance, but they were never came anywhere near being extravagant. That’s why these moccasins stand out from the crowd. Mixing the tasselled part of a loafer with the traditionally more European moccasins, they’ve created something of a unique shoe. Get it from The Corner.
