FREE/MAN point towards this store lookbook from VMC in Switzerland. Describing themselves as “THE original store in Switzerland for vintage styles and American and British sportswear”, established in 1986, their current line up of brands is pretty solid, including the likes of Kapital, Arn Mercantile, Woolrich, LVC, Iron Heart Jeans, Monitaly, Rising Sun and more. The lookbook is the usual bearded man affair but manages to feel like a fresh take on a popular set-up.

Sometimes a vacation shirt is merely one of the three new white tee shirts you snagged on your way to the airport—something dependable that you don’t mind ruining with errant globs of gooey blender drink. Other times your vacation shirt is one that veritably invites vacation.

This specimen from Monitaly falls emphatically in the latter camp. We suspect that if you were wearing this shirt in, say, a South American city that seldom slumbers, it would serve as a beacon, attracting savvy locals eager to indoctrinate an adventurous visitor. From experience, too many days in a white tee and we are unshaven and glued to the mini-bar, making this a shirt that could seriously save a getaway. Pick it up at Mohawk General Store and we reckon it will pick you up in short order.

It seems like there are fewer occasions in the week that warrant a necktie anymore—while the occasions that demand one have disappeared almost completely. While it is liberating to not feel required to wear one in every office, that same lack of stipulation makes us want to wear one even more.

Here are some fine “Narrow Ties” from Monitaly’s Spring/summer 2012 collection. Narrow is good because skinny is a tad silly and wide wants to sell you insurance. It is funny that a company like Monitaly would offer up neck-hangers, though, as so much of what they craft is meant to be worn on boating excursions and bear hikes. Whatever their reasoning, these puppies—made in the U.S.A.—look soft and just a little serious, which is precisely where the tie has landed in these modern times. Up There Store has them.

Gents, Monitaly is back for AW2012. Their strength is in outwear jackets, coats and all variants thereof. Wools are strong in patterns, stripes, and south west influence. Trousers and pants offer an array of options as well – expect heavy wools on garments made to last more than a few seasons.

Monitaly gets major love from writers. Rightfully so it would seem. This plaid wool mackinaw is a great example as to why. It brings just a slight toch of modernity to a coat that you would have likely five years ago passed on as being too much like your gramp’s garb. Today, it is a fresh look made more unique by big details throughout. If you need it, Coggles has it.

Monitaly delivers a small “resort” collection for Spring 2012. It is unlike their usual tailored looks with a focus on a more relaxed approach to leisure. The “ikat” look is brought to life on shorts, trouers, and pull-overs. Both yarn dyed and printed techniques are used to bring out the “ikat” flavor.

You know the worst thing about buying something now? The fact that it might go on sale any day now. We’ve all done it – bought something in a rush before seeing it in a sale a week or so later. We mean, do you return it and buy it again or just keep it? Before we go any more off topic, the reason we bring this up is because of this shirt.
