Kostas Murkudis for MYKITA – Sunglasses

kostas murkudis MYKITA 1 Kostas Murkudis for MYKITA Sunglasses
The new ELEKTRA and PHINEAS models from MYKITA mark the brand’s exploration of “colors, materials, lasers and new print technologies” with designer Kostas Murkudis. The Berlin-based designer turns out crisp futuristic clothes with a uniformed vibe so it makes good sense that these shades would look right at home in New New York 2048.

“The juxtaposed geometric structures were the source of inspiration for the design [and] the surfaces of the glasses were covered with a mesh-like structure that was etched into the stainless steel frames,” we are told. The process yields an eye-catching lightweight metal frame holding tear-shaped lenses that are gripped below by a fine wire. Sublimely subtle.

MYKITA PHEOBE DEVENDRA SET MYKITA Oversize and Round Glasses
Funny that MYKITA has a new Spring/Summer 2012 model called DEVENDRA that they are billing as androgynous, as truly androgynous rock star Devendra Banhardt was campaigning for Oliver People’s just last year. Could just be a coincidence, as the glasses are working to symbolize the current trend toward big frames, and Devendra means chief amongst lords—wait, that doesn’t work. “This stainless steel model is the result of design rules being turned on their head; instead of the usual bold contours emphasizing the top line here, in this case the latter is extremely fine.” Also pictured, the PHOEBE frames represent “MYKITA’s interpretation for this decade.” Not sure what that means, but it at least suggests the frames have nothing to do with the eponymous Friend who sang “Smelly Cat.”

MYKITA for Moncler Sunglasses

They may not be as unisex as one would expect but it is nice to see that the Moncler line is taking their sunglass line with MYKITA in a direction that brings the high quality frames to the forefront of the line. This run of sunglasses is available now at select Moncler and MYKITA shops. Runs a pretty penny though: $730 a pair. Woah.

Roman Kremer for Mykita Spring/Summer 2010 Sunglasses

Selectism - Roman Kremer for Mykita Spring/Summer 2010 Sunglasses

Note: if you think these are a knockoff of the Kayne shutters, or even the Linda Farrows, check again. Roman Kremer takes risk in design and Mykita is willing bring them to market for that consumer who is willing to accept that risk. “The ROMAIN frame is cut out of 0.5 mm stainless steel and features metal  shutters. The design borrows cues from traditional Inuit eyewear, which was designed solely to provide protection from dazzling sunlight and did not have conventional lenses. The very graphic and square-edged frame is inspired by the collection’s leitmotiv of protection and is reminiscent of war face paint.”  Look for them in November.

Eyewear maker, Mykita, has opened doors on their new shop in the heart of Vienna. Stocking a wide array of prescription frames and sunglasses the shop complements the products with a very clean layout. “The basic idea behind the modestly sized (18m2) store is MYKITA’s original back-lit wall system, which can be integrated with ease into any given space. The display wall running down the left-hand side of the store comprises an assembly of countless steel rods normally used to support heavy-duty shelving.”
