“Andrew Rossi’s riveting documentary Page One: Inside The New York Times had its World Premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, and was acquired by Magnolia Pictures and Participant Media for theatrical release this June. In the tradition of great fly-on-the-wall documentaries, the film deftly gains unprecedented access to the New York Times newsroom and the inner workings of the Media Desk.”

New York Times | JJJJound Winter Picks

selectism - jjjound-purist-picks

We’re big fans of Jjjjound – (as is Jay-Z, ‘On to the next one‘ is basically a video version of the site). There’s a new Purist column over at T Magazine’s blog and while the comments are the usual ‘men shouldn’t spend more than $2 on jeans’ affair, his picks are well chosen (Naked & Famous, Lora Piana and Fracap both make an appearance) and it’s well worth a look through. Read the full article here.

New York Times | Japan’s fashion’s among the hippest, little known elsewhere

selectism - ny-times-japan

We have a love/hate affair with Japanese fashion. To be specific, we love the clothes, but hate how hard it is to get hold of the stuff. This New York Times pieces gets to grips with just why Japanese clothing is so hard to get hold of outside of the area and what’s being done about it.

While there are a few omissions in the piece – it ignores Visvims and Kolor’s recent showings in Paris and says that Uniqlo isn’t popular with the trendsetting pack – it’s an interesting article that’s well worth a look. Read it here.

Selectism - NYT | Good Fit for Body and Budget

NYT’s Eric Wilson’s story on budgeting at New York Fashion Week is an interesting read. “Designers are doing what they can to lower prices from the ridiculous levels of the last decade, using lesser fabrics and less of them. And some who are just starting out are trying to distinguish themselves with price. A new men’s line called Bespoken, for example, focuses on high-quality tailoring at prices that would match Jil Sander or Gucci only when the latter are on sale. Shirts cost about $300, jackets around $500 and a suit is $1,100 — not exactly J. Crew prices, but not exactly offensive, either…”

Selectism - T’s Men’s Fashion Issue Now Online

The latest issue of T is now online with cover man, Michael Fassbender as photographed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino. As they mention, “Appropriately, we track down fall’s most enigmatic trend: Sherlock Holmes-inspired Victoriana. The photographer Matthew Brookes shot ‘The Brothers Grim’ in Paris, while Cathy Horyn met with the designer Alexander McQueen in London to discuss his “hard-core view of sexuality presented in a romantic envelope of Victorian darkness.”

NYT | Michael Bastian: That Thing He Does

michael bastian nyt NYT | Michael Bastian: That Thing He Does

NYT has a feature on Michael Bastian that’s worth a reading. “As can be seen from the gentlemanly elegance of his quarters, Mr. Bastian is old-school. In his world, men are still from Mars. Or at least Dartmouth. And it seems he has a point. How else to explain his dark-horse rise as a men’s wear designer? … Mr. Bastian has found surprising success with an agenda so modest it almost seems radical: to give men slimmed-down, spiffed-up versions of the all-American clothes they have long loved.”

I.M. Pei’s Museum of Islamic Art

01 December 2008, 11.24 | Posted in Art, Design | No comments »

islamicartmuseum front I.M. Peis Museum of Islamic Art

The amazing thing about Qatar is that when I.M. Pei says “It would be nice if my new building could live on a private island so as never to be clouded in future building,” they say, “sure.” While more went into the creation of the new Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar, than that simple exchange, it’s nonetheless (and actually much more) remarkable. Museums around the globe may be rethinking the big bang theory of famed architects, but for this, and the intent of making Qatar an arts destination, the inclusion of Pei makes sense.

In case you missed last week’s coverage in the New York Times, a few favorites from the Museum of Islamic Art slide show follow.

Steven Heller on “The Best Buttons of 2008″

With the election over it is time to focus attention squarely on the future. That said, peaking back to the sea of promotional and propagandist material that swirled around us in 2008 has merit. Steven Heller, author of the excellent Iron Fists: Branding in the 20th Century Totalitarian State (Phaidon, 2008), has selected a few favorites for today’s New York Times. The corresponding article is a quick history of campaign buttons, interesting even when divorced from the related slide show.

A few more of Heller’s selections appear after the jump.
