Openers Japan comes through with a few looks at the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 15 mission celebration Omega Speedmaster. It’s dropping this Summer and features an engraving case-back as well as the mission’s colors used on the front face: ” red, white and blue.” The symbolism….

I tend to shy away from the white bands but this Seamaster Ploprof from Omega has me thinking about a timepiece binge.

“This year OMEGA presents its white version of the Ploprof. It has all of the features professional divers have come to expect from OMEGA: a white bi-directional locking bezel with chrome-coated Arabic numerals, an automatic helium escape valve and water resistance to 1200 metres (4000 feet, 120 bar). The watch, with its timeless white bezel and dial, is presented with either a white rubber strap or a brushed mesh ‘Sharkproof’ bracelet… The Ploprof’s case cannot be mistaken for that of any other watch: the screwed-in crown is located at 9 o’clock under a protective buffer. The rotor with its sapphire plate has been newly designed … and the watch’s individual serial number (out of 18). Omega has announced the launch of something special – a 42mm watch made from ceramic and Liquidmetal. “Swatch Group researchers collaborating with OMEGA’s product development team have created a striking ceramic diving bezel whose numbers and scaling, made of the Liquidmetal® alloy, appear in stunning silvery contrast to the black ceramic background. The colour of the ceramic dial perfectly matches that of the bezel. The result is an aesthetic wonder only made possible by several new and innovative processes.” 1948 units are being produced of this ceramic and Liquidmetal monster. That number corresponds with the launch year for the Seamaster. A killer timepiece. (timezone)

Berliners have a nice opportunity to check out Omega’s “The 40th Anniversary of the Moon Landing” Exhibit being held now at the famous KaDeWe Department Store through August 24th. “One of the exhibition’s highlights is a model of the first OMEGA wristwatch to be worn in space: the Speedmaster with the reference CK 2998, identical to the one worn by Walter Schirra during the Mercury Sigma 7 mission. Also on display will be the original Speedmaster watches astronauts Donn F. Eisele (Apollo 7) and Thomas Stafford (Gemini 9 and Apollo 10) had strapped to their wrists during their missions.” (timezone)

Omega cracks the doors open on their new Fifth Avenue store in NYC this past Saturday. The entire Omega collection is available at the new location as well as classic historical pieces from their back catalog. “On display will be the OMEGA Ultra-Thin watch, which was worn by John F. Kennedy during his inaugural address in January of 1961.” Also look for a platinum version of the Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo celebrating 40 years of astronauts wearing the beloved Speedmaster.

A Baselworld killer from Omega in the form of the 2009 Professional Ploprof Diver. The watch made back in the day in conjunction with famous French diver, Jacques Cousteau, comes with a most important “shark proof” bracelet and left side screw crown. Now that’s protection. It’s a vintage classic and updated for the modern diver and diver watch aficionado. (watchismo)

Ablogtoread gets it right on the new Omega Seamaster Diver Watch for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. “There is nothing wild about this limited edition Omega watch, and frankly that is the way I like my Omega limited edition watches. Nothing too avant garde, just a good sober looking timepiece with a nice theme. Omega is pretty much obligated to release limited edition watches for the Olympics. First, they are the official timekeeper for the Olympics (since 1932). Wouldn’t it look silly if they didn’t celebrate that fact every two years?”
