The folks behind the Japanese “Research” brands are anything but low minded folk. Through exhaustive research, the products they present capture the best details, cuts, fabrics and styles of their chosen theme. Mountain Research, naturally, results in some stunning outerwear. Garbstore, the only outlet in the world to carry some of the larger sizes of Mountain Research, has just received the latest. There is a garment bag, and a ton of good things to stuff it with. Coats of several varieties, sharp shirts, rugby’s and even a basic long-sleeve. A bit of new Navel Research has also arrived, so if you’re thinking more coast than hill top, that’s covered.

BEAMS Japan seems to just get it right with almost every collaborative effort they enter into. Their latest with outerwear company, Moncler, brings forth some excellent looks for the men’s market. The Moncler Everest Jacket comes lined on the exterior with wool while the Himalaya jacket is the staple shiny nylon outer. The best part is that both come in black… more like black black. BEAMS gets right to the point with these Moncler looks.

Not everyone is into the sheen of the Moncler movement nor the on-going strength of Patagona and North Face outerwear looks in the USA. Many alternatives exist in the outerwear world. Since the 70’s. Britian’s Puffa Originals have been well recognized for their two tone colorways. “Puffa Originals are a design classic, fit for purpose, the jackets and gilets capture the essence of British sporting spirit, adventure and excellence.” If you skied Europe back in the day, then Puffa should very familiar.

Japan’s Phigvel Makers & Co. is a fine garment maker. They, like many Japanese brands, takes classics men’s outerwear and brings it to the modern world. Their Autumn/Winter 2008 collection provides the expected looks for the cold season – wools, peacoats, shirts – fashioned in top quality builds. Great looks for the Autumn and Winter.

The outcome is something something special in technical gear. The midpoint of the summer is here and its time to begin (if even with digust) a bit about the coming cold months of late fall and winter. We tend to start our hunt for the next great winter look with the outerwear of the Monestier de Clermont, Moncler. The bubble and sheen of their jackets remains in trend after years on the backburner but for the those in the know, Moncler never slowed down and has keept producing a quality product with a very solid look.

Outerwear continue to draw more attention from the technical accessory makers with DNR reporting on luggage maker Tumi’s jump into the market. "Tumi is expanding its diffusion line, T-Tech, with the launch of an outerwear collection and a redesigned bag line for fall…The travel lifestyle brand will continue to reposition itself as a player in the luxury market with the debut of T-Tech Outerwear by Tumi at The Collective this week alongside the revamped T-Tech Adventure luggage collection. The 18-piece performance apparel collection, which will hit stores in September."

The weather is  just getting hot here in the Northeast USA but when you live this close to the slopes, snow is always on the mind. View of the Moncler Neige Collection seem to also make us think of snow early. Expect this collection for Fall/Winter 08/09.

Wallpaper takes an interesting look into a forthcoming collaboration between Stone Island and designer Aitor Throup. "Another debut at Salone this year was Modular Anatomy, the first instalment of what looks to be an interesting collaboration between Stone Island and young fashion designer Aitor Throup. The project involves the construction of an ostensibly traditional down jacket pieced together in small parts using separate, individually filled cushion segments… Throup’s design philosophy starts with the human form and allows the garment to evolve organically, hence the building-block approach rather than a more conventional construction using sleeves, armholes and body panels… "

Italy outwear maker, Fay is making a further push in the USA market, according to DNR. “Fay, the Italian outerwear brand, is out to make a name for itself stateside.

The Fay collection, including sportswear and outerwear, moved into the Barneys New York flagship on Madison Avenue last winter and, come fall, it will be rolled out to four additional Barneys doors…The business was founded in 1980 with one hit product, the “4-Hook” coat, inspired by American firemen’s coats.”
