Jessica Lack of the Guardian does a tremendous job with her artist of the week column. Though the chosen highlight might not always resonate, her simple descriptions are a valuable way of introducing large numbers of readers to new artists. This week, she’s chosen Emma Talbot whose haunting work is now on view at Gallery North, Northumbria University. The example above, Haunted House (2008) is a little easier to check out.

Gustave Caillebotte: Impressionist Paintings from Paris to the Sea

gc brooklynmuseum front Gustave Caillebotte: Impressionist Paintings from Paris to the Sea

Anyone who studied art history in Uni has spent a good deal of time discussing Gustave Caillebotte’s The Floor Scrapers. It is one of the paintings included in Gustave Caillebotte: Impressionist Paintings from Paris to the Sea, opening today.

As a participant in the landmark retrospective exhibition that introduced Gustave Caillebotte to the American public in 1976–77, the Brooklyn Museum is proud to present Gustave Caillebotte: Impressionist Paintings from Paris to the Sea, the first major showing of the artist’s oeuvre in New York in over thirty years. In addition to the well-known Parisian cityscapes that have traditionally marked him as the “Urban Impressionist,” Caillebotte painted scenes of outdoor life away from the city on the coast of Normandy and in the villages of Yerres and Petit Gennevilliers, where he and his family maintained estates. The approximately forty paintings included in this focused thematic exhibition reveal Caillebotte’s extraordinary passion for subjects in which water plays a central role—as an enigmatic, magical element reflecting its surroundings, as an essential atmospheric ingredient, and as a scene for sporting activities. As a passionate rower and yachtsman, Caillebotte approached his motifs with the trained eyes and hand of an accomplished engineer and sportsman. The exhibition will also include drawings as well as models and sketches for the construction of Caillebotte’s sailboats.

The exhibition opens today and runs to July 5, 2009, at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

Oliver Dorfer “The PulpitProject”

Oliver Dorfer’s “The PulpitProject” opens today at New York’s Freight + Volume. The exhibited work will remain on view until February 21, 2009 at the gallery, located 542 West 24th Street, New York, NY.

This is a first New York outing for the young Austrian Dorfer, and the works he is showing come from his ongoing “pulpproject” series, so named for his source material drawn from the pages of comic books and other cheap publications. Subjecting them to collaged and Photoshopped mutation, Dorfer then paints them on the reverse side of large sheets of Plexiglas. The remarkable results, super-smooth and more than six feet square in the full-scale pieces, meld the appearances of Pop art, shop windows, and medieval woodcuts. It makes for an unsettling mix. Five years in the making, the Sol LeWitt Wall Drawing Retrospective opens at Mass Moca this coming Sunday, November 16. The project is a collaborative effort between Yale University Art Gallery and the Williams College Museum of Art. Since April, over 60 artists have touched almost a mile of walls to create the new galleries. LeWitt, the “master of conceptualism,” designed the walls prior to his passing last year. The opening marks the largest assembledge of LeWitt wall drawings, and a 25% expansion of Mass Moca’s gallery space.

If interested, Mass Moca’s website features a working in progress site for the project.
