Patagonia Torrentshell Jacket

Patagonia have over 50 years experience perfecting outdoors attire, consistently (and rather humbly) turning out garments that are fit use in both an urban or rural setting. The pioneering brand are often overlooked, yet have and do continue to inspire a great range of contemporary labels who more readily frequent the menswear spotlight. The Torrentshell is one of their key designs, worth highlighting as we collectively approach the grand Summer/Autumn transition. The lightweight jacket is entirely waterproof, produced from 2.5oz 50-denier ripstop nylon and includes a range of clever features to help you brave the elements – a true outerwear staple. The Original Store has it. -jr

patagonia boardshorts 1 Patagonia Wavefarer Board Shorts

Recycled garments have been the spotlight of many menswear brands recently. This summer, Patagonia shares their vision with a newly designed boardshort that takes a “green” approach to manufacturing by making each pair recyclable by way of the  Common Threads Recycling Program. The shorts come in 24 different fabrics for you to choose from. They trunks boasts a “lightweight, quick-drying 4.3oz 100% nylong with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish.” The most interesting detail is the “self-draining side zip pocket with a corrosion-proof plastic zipper pull.” They also come in three custom outseams, 19″, 21″ and 23″ for added comfort and length.

Patagonia Slingshot Down Vest

“Yvon Chouinard got his start as a climber in 1953 as a 14-year-old member of the Southern California Falconry Club, which trained hawks and falcons for hunting.” Chouinard was able to create a trend as he gained popularity in mountaineering. His choice of climbing attire paved the way for what we now know as Patagonia. The “Slingshot Down Vest” is “600-fill-power” goose down vest with two front pockets and a western style yoke. The vest comes in three different colors and you can get it at Patagonia.

selectism - Patagonia Arrant Trail Running Shoe

Old habits die hard.

We’re getting older, perhaps a little more refined, but the sneaker Cupid still sometimes manages to pierce our hearts. Patagonia’s Arrant trail runner has the right mix of color blocking, technical specifications, and timeless appeal to strike our fancy. The Arrant features a GORE-TEX® upper (a welcome touch) too.

These can be filed under Autumn outdoor lust.

The fit looks proper and made for urban wear (less so for the active user who may need some room in there to stretch). “h2no® waterproof breathable shell, 2-way adjustable hood with visor, microfleece-lined neck and chin for comfort, all water-resistant zippers, full-length front zipper, arm pit zips, handwarmer pockets which provide a packable self-storage travel option” Packs away nicely as well. (acquire)

Patagonia Nano Puff Scarf

Selectism - Patagonia Nano Puff Scarf

Our friends at Notcouture pointed us at this “nano puff” scarf from the Patagonia world. Im not sure we’ve ever featured their goods before but this outwear brand should certainly see a click jump based on our “camping and fishing” ideas. What I find interesting is the take on the puffy coat/jacket. This one of course wraps your neck rather than your full body with the same warmth and comfort. Not overly stylish but damn practical.

Sabotage Times | Yvon Chouinard, fashion adventurer

Selectism - patagonia-yvon-chouinard

Sabotage Times has a great feature on Patagonia’s founder, Yvon Chouinard. Tracing the origins of the company, the piece looks at how Patagonia grew to the company it is today. Patagonia remain a huge influence on the world of menswear, including two of our upcoming feature subjects, so this is well worth a read.

Yvon Chouinard. Heard of him? He’s one of the good guys. A 72 year old surfer and climber. A die hard environmentalist. A former blacksmith turned climbing gear manufacturer who went on to found one of the most successful outdoor clothing companies in the world. Patagonia.
