Port magazine commisioned Photographer John Spinks to create this video, Gieves & Hawkes styled by David St John James – this joint effort, originally designed for their iPad app, is most definitely worth a watch. Beautifully shot, everything about this is slow and considered, the collection impressive as ever. Commentary is provided by Barry Tulip, Gieves & Hawkes new design director who speaks on his modern interpretation of the label’s considerable archive. Take a look back at what’s appearing for Autumn/Winter 2012 from Mr Tulip in our London Fashion Week coverage. (AB)

Selectism - port-issue4-01

Now on issue 4, it looks like Port Magazine has carved out a nice out for itself in the mens market. The new issue features an interview with Lebron James, Alain de Botton prophesizing on porn and a feature on the set with Michael Fassbender. Magculture says it’s taken over Esquire’s mantle. Bold talk, but it’s hard to disagree at the moment.

Take a leap to see more.

Selectism - port-issue-3

More magazine news today, this time it’s Port magazine. We hate to use cliches like ‘going from strength to strength’ but Port has gone from, ermm, strength to strength. This issue they’ve got an exclusive on the adaption of Hunter S Thompson’s novel as well as pieces on Danny Boyle and Dieter Rams.

On another note, there’s a lovely feature in the Eye about how the people behind the magazine have convinced all those names to get involved. Read that here

Selectism - Port2

Magculture has a first look at Port’s second issue. With a first issue that sold out – and with good reason, it was great – this issue has a feature piece on The New Yorker editor David Remnick, as well as pieces by Nicholson Baker, Jon Snow and Martin Amis. It’ll be out on the 2nd of June.

Selectism - port-magazine-01

Gorkana have an interesting interview with Port editor Dan Crowe. The newly launched magazine (available at an extremely select few retailers in London and for free on the iPad) has been attracting attention because of their focus on content instead of advertising. While the thing’s worth a read the quote that stuck out in our minds was when he was asked what was going wrong with magazines today.

“It seems to be now that if an established Hollywood star brings a film out then a magazine must have them on the cover and it is that kind of lack of self-editing that makes magazines incredibly boring now. You are just force-feeding content to readers and not allowing them to make their own mind up about things. Coupled with that you have this 60:40 split between advertising and content and it all adds up to make it seem like there is no love for the content any more.”

Who said print’s dead? Port is the new ‘intelligent style’ magazine that’s explained in video above. It’s got some interesting folks on board, including the likes of Jon Snow, Fergus Henderson and Hanif Kureishi. While that sounds great, the real question is whether it’ll be able to avoid the advertorial trap that so many magazines fall into.
