"Leaping Tall Buildings: The Origins of American Comics" Coffee Table Book

Coffee-table bound for comic heads and a handy primer for those uninitiated with the spectacular depth and scope of the comic book universe, Leaping Tall Buildings: The Origins of American Comics Leaping Tall Buildings: The Origins of American Comics Coffee Table Book offers a historical survey of the industry through profiles of the luminaries who helped build it, starting in the 1930s. Set for an April release from powerHouse Books, herein, the photography of Seth Kushner and words by Christopher Irving—the duo behind oft-clicked comics website Graphic NYC – builds a narrative that follows comic evolution from humble newsprint to mega-budget movies.

Included in Leaping Tall Buildings Leaping Tall Buildings: The Origins of American Comics Coffee Table Book are Mad magazine’s Al Jaffee, Neal Adams, Art Spiegelman, Frank Miller, Harvey Pekar, Alex Ross, Becky Cloonan and Chris Ware, creating a wide view of things to say the least. Profiles feature photos from intimate studio visits and the story unfolds like good old-fashioned journalism (see: newsprint).

Timing couldn’t be better as we haven’t seen such a cluster of superhero movies in maybe forever. May this document keep things in perspective. Available from Amazon Leaping Tall Buildings: The Origins of American Comics Coffee Table Book.

Preview | "Gary Cooper: Enduring Style" Book

With a forward by Ralph Lauren, Gary Cooper: Enduring Style Preview | Gary Cooper: Enduring Style Book functions as a monograph of style and an ode to the actor’s elegant style. Rooted in the American ideal of the everyman hero, Cooper’s mixed tailored European pieces with American sportswear, forging a distinctly American (yet thoroughly international) look that would become the blueprint of the masculine all-American wardrobe.

The book compiles many never-before-seen photographs, many by Cooper’s wife Rocky, and compliments the images with thoughts from authors G. Bruce Boyer and Maria Cooper Janus.

News Art | Manipulated Photographs from the Burns Archive

selectism - News Art: Manipulated Photographs from the Burns Archive

“News Art: Manipulated Photographs from the Burns Archive presents the unexplored visual history of the melding of art, photography, and journalism. It is the first work to document the fascinating combination of art and photography necessary to achieve accurate copy or story emphasis in newspapers. These images from 1900–1960 illustrate the range of art enhancement—from simple outlining or airbrushing to complete overpainting. They are all individual creations, one-of-akind photographs. Even if other newspapers used a copy of the same photograph, as was often the case, the artistic preparation was unique. The subjects are as varied as our world: crime scenes, world events, social and business personalities, and human interest stories. All were important in their time and some stand as timeless icons.”

The book is written by Stanley D. Burns, MD, a New York City opthalmic surgeon and noted photography historian, and Sara Cleary-Burns. It will release in January from Powerhouse.
