Spring 2009 sees Real Real Genuine continuing to develop core strengths. This, of course, is in denim. A new cut has been introduced finding medium ground between RRG’s classic loose and straight leg. The mid-cut comes in raw and aged finish. Complementing the denim are two new trouser offerings, a selvedge twill (the Cornell) and the Kirtlington, a slim fit wool pant – work pants for the outdoors and the office. Back to the denim, new shirting selections include a selvedge denim western shirt, as well as a very sharp polo (Jasper). A few more of RRG’s excellent tees have also been added. Brilliant “Great British Denim” all round.

Real Real Genuine’s spring offerings are beginning to appear online. They’ve started with the basics – a lightweight crew neck and a sampling of new t-shirts. The crew follows the Tribes 2 t-shirt, with heavy transfer “REAL” block lettering on either grey marl, slate blue or white. The sweatshirt is constructed with a one piece method, which removes the seams from the shoulder and arm. This technique has also been adapted for a t-shirt this spring, the Dennis. The shirt features subtle wrap graphics supplied by New York’s DeScript Design.

Apart from exceedingly fine denim, footwear collaborations and accessories, Real Real Genuine provides a fresh brew of cologne. “Utopian” was developed by Social Creatures and takes inspiration from the optimism and sense of newness fostered in post-war Britain. A new bottle has been developed for the holiday season, housing a manageable 30ml stock. Travel portions are also available.

The latest to work with Real Real Genuine is Machine 17. Helmed by Ben Robinson, who also pushes designs for DIE (and formally Full Count), Machine 17 allows more personal reflection in Robinson’s art. The pendant is the first foray into precious metals. Coming in sterling silver the piece is an ode to popped bottles… quality not withstanding. The t-shirt promotes a shared RRG and Machine 17 interest in music, particularly the Northern Soul movement. There is no doubt that Richard Hobbs’ Real Real Genuine does denim well. For Fall, we learn the brand also does shirts and twills with equal strength. Denimology reminded me on viewing that I have yet to mention my good friend Nick’s very favorite denim company. Real Real Genuine is a United Kingdom special. You see, they make a jean for a man looking for a premium regular and loose fit. Sure, they carry a skinny jean as well, but their straight and loose leg silhouettes that come in your choice of aged or raw are tops. And the added bonus of a tote to take away is fitting.
