richard chai interview The Cut | Richard Chai Interview

We’ve noted our hatred for the rigid rules that menswear lives by before, but we do believe in some kind of order. And apparently, so does Richard Chai as we share the same fashion pet peeve – too skinny jeans. Just to clarify, we don’t hate skinny jeans but we do hate them on guys who have no business wearing them. Now we’ve got that off our chest, where were we? Oh, yes, Richard Chai. The Cut have a nice interview with him and here’s our favourite answer in the interview:

What’s something everyone should have in their closet?
Confidence.

Richard Chai is the latest designer to take over ODIN’s single brand concept shop, DEN, in NYC. “The Den space reflects a minimal and architectural approach, one that parallels the Richard’s design sensibility.  The installation will carry a large part of his Men’s Spring 09 collection that was presented in Paris along with some new and exclusive pieces cut specially for the store.  In addition to the men’s collection will be a small capsule of Richard Chai womenswear, which features such signature design elements as French seaming, arc details, and refined tailoring. Also showcased in Richard’s installation will be the artwork of his friend, artist Daniel Peddle. His collages, created from found and recycled papers serve as the backdrop for the store.”

Fashionisto gives their thoughts on the Richard Chai Autumn 2009 collection. “This season sees the New York debut of Chai’s third menswear collection.  Chai approaches menswear with caution opting for a safe wearable collection.  Chai focuses on outerwear, presenting his reinterpretation of the motorcycle jacket and peacoat among others.  Chai’s collection is most notably marked by both fitted and relaxed silhouettes decked in plaids.”

Richard Chai, a menswear line that hit stores last week, is headlined by the brother of Eddy Chai. Eddy Chai has been one of New York’s most powerful tastemakers for some time with his influential East Village menswear boutique Odin.

But his brother Richard that has been left toiling away in women’s wear. Until now… His new collection takes the preppy look a few steps further, resulting in revamped peacoats and cardigans that manage to look a few decades ahead of the usual polo shirts and slacks. For Fall you’ll see impeccably cut flannel shirts and vividly colored V-necks to prepare for chillier times, along with a set of close-cropped pants.
