Our editor in Berlin calls, Richard Mille watches, “the Acronym of wrist watches… the highest form of watch making.” He may be onto something with that statement. Three new models were announced this week in Basel. The Tourbillon RM 039 Aviation E6-B Flyback in titanium , the RM 055 Bubba Watson and the RM 031 High Performance. The complications in the three above are very serious business. What we know on the surface is that the RM 039 Tourbillon (very serious business) in titanium will be released in a series of 30 pieces, while the RM 055 Bubba Watson “is housed in a white case made of AZT aluminum oxide and rubber-injected titanium.”  The look of these timepieces is less than an 1/8 of the full story. Ben Clymer of Hodinkee gives us a roundup of the ultra-high end, high priced timepieces shown at this month’s SIHH show; many of which are of complications that are stunningly expensive.

I spent last week in Geneva at the Salon International De La Haute Horlogerie (SIHH). The SIHH is unlike BaselWorld because it’s held exclusively for brands owned by or associated with the Richemont group, a luxury conglomerate that owns the likes of Cartier, Vacheron Constantin, Panerai, and a few other high-end manufacturers. The trade show is unlike any other in the world – in fact, in any industry. It is very exclusive – only press and select retailers are allowed within its halls and the level of watchmaking displayed is unrivaled.

Expectations are always high for SIHH, but this year presented some truly exceptional timepieces at the high-end. Here are some of my favorite pieces, all of which really push the boundaries of traditional watchmaking…for a price, of course.

Coming first thing in 2012 is the new Richard Mille RM 037 watch – a unisex watch which features a new Mille in-house automatic calibre CRMA1 and an incredible array of technical changes which we will spare you with. For those looking for more technical details on the timepiece, timezone does a great job of summarizing. Walk away with this for the moment, like all Mille’s, the Rm 037 comes in titanium, red gold, or white gold.

Like Hublot, Richard Mille releases watches in limited editions. However, RM does so at a smaller, more exclusive scale. The RM 028 Saint-Tropez (a limited edition of the brand’s popular dive watch) takes color cues from yachting (surprise, surprise) and offers a rubber strap. Show support for Brasil or Mexico (whichever “team” you support) with the new RM28 diver watches from Richard Mille. The $90,000 divers are part of a 20 unit special edition only available from the Beverly Hills Richard Mille shop. “The skeletonized automatic movement of the RM 028 utilizes a rotor with variable geometry, a major innovation of Richard Mille that allows the level of automatic winding to be adjusted to the user’s lifestyle via the setting of two 18K white gold wings.” Major.

The Richard Mille company drops a new timepiece on the market with a slightly smaller face than usual. “Based on the RM 025 Tourbillon diver, the new RM 028 diver comes in a smaller case size of 47mm. It is made of titanium with rubber and is water resistant to 300 meters.” For the man looking for something with shine on the wrist.

In celebration of the 400 year anniversary of the founding of Quebec City, Richard Mille under the commission of the Canton of Jura in Switzerland, have built this incredible pendulum clock. Presented during the 12th Summit Francophone, the Richard Mille timepiece will be permanently housed at the Bibliothèque Gabrielle Roy in Quebec City.

Its about being complicated…complications rather. Thats whats distinguished a 500$US watch from a 10,000$US watch. Its the craftsmanship; the labor of humans working at micro levels in creating what is essentially a flawless time keeping product.
