Rolex Explorer II Orange Hand Watch

A banger from Rolex. The Explorer II returns with the classic  orange hands that will prove to be one of the most sought after pieces this year (they first appeared back in 1971). “Here it is Watch Fans, the new Rolex 216670 aka the orange handed Rolex Explorer II.  Everything about this watch is spot on, at least for an armchair Rolex guy like myself. The Rolex 216670 Explorer II marks the 40th anniversary of the original Explorer II.  The case is enlarged to 42mm and houses the NEW Rolex caliber 3187 which is entirely designed and manufactured by Rolex.” (perpetuelle)

Project X British Military “Stealth” Rolexes

Project X British Military "Stealth" Rolexes

Have to say these custom Rolexes work for me. London’s Project  X Designs delivers some “sub” takes on the Rolex Submariner models. Three Submariners mods are part of the series: the Mk III, Mk IV, and Mk V. “The Mk III pays homage to the Submariner worn by Sean Connery in the 1950s Bond movies; the Bond character was originally a former SBS commando.” The Mk IV comes in on the darker end of the scale with a black carbon casing and a blacked out face, while the Mk V was created for a “subtle and sophisticated contrast to the Submariner models.. the case is satin finished before being treated with a hard-wearing black DLC.” (highsnob/luxist)

The Project X Rolex Explorer II Orange Hand Watch

project x rolex selectism The Project X Rolex Explorer II Orange Hand Watch

Hodinkee profiles another new startup in the custom Rolex game, and damn if this one is not hot! “Until today, with the release of Project X Designs new limited edition series. Based on the current Rolex Explorer II, which our most prodigal friends proclaimed to be the only modern Rolex worth buying, this limited run of 24 watches is an absolute killer… The Explorer II has been coated in DLC to give in the “blackout” look.  Then, Project X has filled the 24-hour scale on the bezel with bright orange paint.  Finally, and clearly most importantly, the red GMT hand has been replaced with an orange one.”

ian fleming rolex explorer 00 The original Bond Watch Rolex Explorer

The National Watch & Clock Museum is celebrating the History of the James Bond Timepieces with an exhibit opening next summer. This will be the first comprehensive showing all the timepieces found in the legendary spy film series including the original Rolex Explorer worn by the Bond creator himself,  Ian Fleming.

“This is the first time that Ian Fleming’s watch has been exhibited in the United States. The watch was recently on display at the Imperial War Museum in London, featured in an exhibit on the life and work of Ian Fleming. Fionn Morgan, Ian Fleming’s stepdaughter, states “Ian would have enjoyed the idea of displaying his own Oyster Perpetual as part of an exhibition of James Bond watches…It is wonderful to see the James Bond legacy presented through the watches that this character has worn… Collectors and the public will learn a lot through this exhibition.” (timezone)
