The vertical stripe has been neglected as of late – what with everyone fussing over the breton stripe. So it’s nice to see some designers bringing a Voodoo Child style slight return to the vertical stripe shirt, even if everyone’s still in love with the Breton. This one from Penny Stock is pretty cool although if we were being fussy – and we’re being just that – we’d say that the button colour doesn’t quite suit the colour of the shirt. The new Spring/Summer 2011 collection from Left Field gives us a different take on classic garments. The “Green Strip” Polo is one piece that looks to be a hit for the season. The shirt is made of “100% Ringspun Cotton” and is manufactured in the United States. The distinct detail that dawns this shirt is the “contrast collar and floral print placket.” A great piece from the Philadelphia born Christian McCann. Context Clothing has them.

Speaking of things that now look tame after the flower power movement – don’t panelled shirts look downright pedestrian these days? A season or two or go they were the height of style for folks who wanted to look different but weren’t ready for the Bernard Willheims of the world. Now they’re just nice shirts. (Revolve)

Short sleeve shirts are still a thorny topic. Do they make you look like you’re ready for the summer or like a photocopier salesman? In fact, what’s so bad about looking like a photocopier salesman? A short sleeve shirt and grey flannel trousers could look very good if the proportions were right. In fact, that might just be our new look for this year. Salesman Steez – you heard it here first. We often hear about how hard it is to wear a granddad collar. Baloney – like most things, it’s as hard as you want to make it. We don’t see why it’d be difficult to wear this with any sort of dressed down outfit, it’s just clothing people. To put this into basketball terms, you should stop acting like all Jared Jeffries and start being more like Ray Allen from the 3pt line. (ASOS)

We’re resisting the urge to make an ‘Aloha!’ joke here. Instead we’ll just point out how much we like the pattern on this colour (it doesn’t work so well on the red version) and that the 3/4 length sleeve is a nice sleeve length for the folks who like sartorial halfway houses. (Superdenim)

We shouldn’t like this, but we do. A gingham shirt with geometric embroidery across the shoulders doesn’t sound great on paper, but we like the results. It’s like something your gran would knit for you – if your gran was a fashion designer. (LN-CC)

The Surface to Air Spring/Summer Collection has been delivered and the guys and girls at Gargyle have it available. The “Classic Shirt V5 Oxford” offers a slim narrow fitting cut that has a great “classic plaid placket with mother of pearl buttons.” The clean “S2A” embroidered logo adds to the sophisticated look. The plaid detail at the closure of the shirt distinguishes it from every oxford shirt in the market today and it looks great tucked in. Gargyle has them.

While the phrase ‘1990’s fit’ still scares the beejesus out of us – as cool as it is to talk about how stylish Senfield was, we don’t want to see the fits return – we do like the look of this shirt. And it’s called ‘rain and thunder’, which makes it doubly amazing. (Tres Bien)
