Pitti – Gitman Vintage Shirting Autumn/Winter 2012

gitman brothers fall winter 2012 13 Pitti Gitman Vintage Shirting Autumn/Winter 2012

Gitman Brothers gets boy scout and camper for Autumn/Winter 2012 with a slew of new patterns and takes on the classic shirtings looks. The Boy Scout shirts, with reproduction patchwork and all are only one angle in the camping ensemble they bring. Think back to those summer camps with segregated sleeping quarters and you can see where they’re going. Choose pin-up girls in the wild versus the lake lodge boys doing what they do. Fire Island proper… though late for the primetime season.

truzzi fall winter 2012 5 Pitti Truzzi Autumn/Winter 2012 Shirting

We’ve been told that outside Italy Milanese shirt makers Truzzi are very popular in Japan. Not surprising as they fall on the old school list of Italian shirt makers. In business since 1890, Truzzi’s quality and years on the market make them some of the best around.  Well worth a look for those in the market for new patterns…

Pitti – Altea Autumn/Winter 2012 – Color First, Always

altea fall winter 2012 15 Pitti Altea Autumn/Winter 2012 Color First, Always

While the usual cast of great lines covered by Selectism are showing at Pitti Uomo this week, we’re going to mix it up a bit by profiling a range of fashion brands that may or may not have been profiled. Many of them will be names familiar to our Italian readers, as well as fresh faces from our Europe.

We start it off with an Italian firm Altea, who back in 1892 started their company by producing neckties for the local market. with the necktie form pretty much solidified in premium silks, Altea put their focus on color first. Today, the same holds true in their full collection that begins with color palettes which garments are then designed around. The Altea offering is a large one with men’s garments ranging from their necktie roots to knits and beyond.

publish spring 2012 preview-01

For Spring 2012, Publish offers bright floral prints, tailored jogger pants, and wool/cotton shorts. All garments are indicative of a refinement of brand aesthetic, with Publish continuing to build on a desire to re-invent military pieces with a jazz influence. Expansion of materials used also lends to the growth of the line – aside from oxfords and wools, they are also employing some Cordura in rugged pants.

Summer Shirting from 3Sixteen

3sixteen Summer2011 1 540x420 Summer Shirting from 3Sixteen

3Sixteen’s Summer shirting takes Japanese fabrics – sunwashed chambrays and lightweight madras fabrics – and applies some good old fashioned made in the USA craftsmanship. Unique pocket details, like bar tacked stress points for added strength, give each shirt individual appeal. For example, the short sleeve USN Shirt, balances a traditional button pocket with a right side pocket featuring vertical stitches to accommodate pens and other small accessories. It’s the little things, like pocket thought, that keeps us interested in 3Sixteen season to season.

Ledbury Shirts

06 June 2011, 13.00 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

selectism - Ledbury Shirts

Paul Trible and Paul Watson are two Southern Americans who share a passion for English shirting. Together, they founded Ledbury, a company based in Richmond, Virginia and on the principles of great fit and superb quality.

Their story begins at Oxford University. Trible, former lead at Operation Smile, UK and Watson, former Defense Department employee, had entered an MBA Program – dreams of shifting from non-profit life to gold lined hallways in tow. Those dreams, however, were dashed when graduation day aligned unpleasantly with the collapse of Lehman Brothers.

Rather than panic, Trible turned to his true love – shirts. He marched to Jermyn Street and finagled an internship with a master shirtmaker. The 7-month experience laid the seed for Ledbury, Trible’s appetite for buttons, fabrics and patterns wet and not nearly fully watered.

The brand now works with Italian fabrics and Polish manufacture (Trible spent considerable time tapping the most efficient and high quality factories – his goal of quality and affordability best met in this configuration), effectively melding the founders interest in British style, a look fitting of their Southern heritage. Their offerings extend beyond casual and office to tuxedo, each with distinct innovations like offering the perfect v at the neckline – preventing the shirt from being buttoned too high or too low in a smart casual setting – designed to distinguish Ledbury from any competitor.

Wharf Clothing & Wares Shirting

selectism - Wharf Clothing & Wares Shirting

Nestled into a (very) unassuming location in Warwick, RI, Wharf Clothing & Wares is just under 3 months old. In that short time, owner Robert Babigian has built an impressive inline collection of shirting – I spent some time in the shop yesterday, inspecting firsthand. Sure, Rob benefits greatly from collaboration with the nearby New England Shirt Company (of Fall River, MA). But, he benefits equally from having a firm sense of what works and a willingness to play around. Shirts are produced in both oxford broadcloth and poplin, the club collar poplin shirts being the winner… though it must be noted that collar choices all round are what most impress about the collection. (We also love any opportunity to mention Fall River… and give a shout out to Chris Herren).

Take a detailed look at the Wharf Shirt – including a look at the club collar – after the leap.
