Selectism - A Look Inside Hermès Man on Madison Avenue

Back in January, we previewed the opening of the Hermès Man shop on Madison Avenue. Well GQ does one better with some of the first looks inside the space as well as an interview with “men’s designer Veronique Nichanian about what men don’t know about Hermès, the custom item you can only get here, and the one necessary extravagance a man should get.”

selectism - Man Up. SF Pop Up Market

Looking for something to do this weekend? Or, simply looking for an excuse to visit San Francisco?

Following the (now) grand tradition of New York’s Pop-Up Flea, Man Up. San Francisco brings a well selected group of menswear and men’s interest exhibitors to the California Modern Art Gallery (1035 Market St, San Francisco) this weekend. The event is spearheaded by Durable Goods Concern, a collective of five blokes with a passion for style and quality. Aside from shopping, visitors will also be able to down a few free Lagunitas IPAs…. and teetotalers can enjoy some fresh coffee.

The offerings cover bikes, books, denim, watches and more.

Running from today through Sunday. Unable to make it? The guys have also graciously lined up a contest to appease salty out-of-towners.

Full attendee list and preview video after the jump.

Blackbird Seattle Opens The Field House

Selectism - Blackbird Seattle Opens The Field House

Seattle’s Blackbird add another set of doors to their growing ensemble of shops. This one is clearly tailored to the workers brigade of the heritage lifestyle. “The Field House is reminiscent of general stores that were once at the heart of rural towns across America. Its shelves are stocked with a wide variety of merchandise, including classic work wear, vintage goods, basic groceries and candies, flowers, and perfumes and candles. It captures the history, geography, and folklore of times past, when goods were less disposable and had more meaning, a time when people canned their own food and took a moment to converse with strangers. It is perhaps Blackbird’s most personal store…” Expect Filson, RRL, and many more brands to fill their shelves.

Selectism - Halloween Shop Windows on Bleeker St. NYC

Shophound rounds up images of some of NYC’s Bleeker Street shop windows outfitted for the holiday of the devilish. They post a bunch of looks but seem to think the end game lands in the hands of two shops. “Lots of Bleecker Street’s stores make an extra effort for Halloween windows, but it basically comes down to a battle between Ralph Lauren and Marc Jacobs to see who can concoct the spookiest display.”

Selectism - Arne Quinze for the new L'Eclaireur in Paris

Martine and Armand Hadida’s L’Eclaireur boutique in Paris is a premier location for discovering the best new designers in Parisan fashion. Now with the help of artist Arne Quinze, they continue to grow into new spaces. Yazter fills us in. “In 2009 L’Eclaireur dares to take it to another level by entrusting the  realization of their new 450 m2 venue on 40 rue de Sévigné in Paris, to Belgian artist Arne Quinze. Founder of Studio Arne Quinze, the conceptual architecture and design platform, Arne Quinze is a self-taught man who’s talent manifests in multiple disciplines: contemporary art, video installations, modern transportation techniques and spaces like Square Brussels Meeting Center (2009), die kunstbar in Cologne (2008) and upcoming a grand conceptual  architecture masterplan for Belair, a 100000 square meter location in   Brussels. Nevertheless these crossovers Arne Quinze stays foremost an artist.”

Selectism - Wish You Were Here | London-NYC Shop Swap

Wallpaper* reports in regarding an interesting take on pop-up retail with a cross Atlantic swap of sorts. The “Wish You Were Here” Project positions 30 London boutiques into the Lower East Side at 186 Orchard Street. “More than just an excuse for a group jolly, the conglomerate of independent boutiques are engaging in an extended swap shop with counterparts of the Lower East Side shopping district – feeling a symbiotic, albeit transatlantic approach to their brands, both individually and of the two areas as a whole.”

selectism - N3 By Padopoulous and Kondilus

The third store designed by Dimitris Padopoulous and Yiannis Konilus for Comme des Garcons in Athens is a more permanent vision than the previous pop-up (Gorilla) shops. Conceived as white cube meets boutique, the effect (as seen) is minimal. Shelving of white wood against white walls. The space is shared by Bearbrick, who inhabit the raw space of the old pop-up. This allows for a striking change of pace from brand to brand, as well as a contrast between the design duos new and early spaces. (via Frame).
