Yesterday I went to a meeting at Independence Seaport Museum and was given a quick run through of recent acquisitions. One of the finest items was a 30 year old Sperry Top-Sider. They’d been resoled several times, and the foot-bed too had been replaced. But, the upper held a fantastic three decade long history. One America’s cup, countless local yacht races, and an owner proud of the respect granted by the shoes natural patina. They were one part disgusting and one greater part glorious.

I’m posting the new Sperry collaboration with J. Crew, a rather nice chino version, more or less as a reason to tell the above story. Moral of that, the older and rattier the Top-Sider the more respect you’ll get in the boating community.

Not really into yachting? Then the J. Crew version will likely garner the street respect you crave.

Crew helps continue to push the boat/deck shoes into 2010 by making available the 75th anniversary collection from Sperry. “In celebration of its 75th anniversary, Sperry (the original seadog and maker of the iconic deck shoe since 1935) is releasing a limited-edition collection based on authentic designs from its archives—and this one just happens to be inspired by the very first shoe that Paul Sperry ever made. It’s always nice to feature an item you’ve been following for months on end. We featured these boots way back in February, but now they’re finally in stores. But (there’s always a but) there’s good news and bad news.

The good news is they’re affordably priced (£85) and will look great when they’ve been beaten up a little. The bad news is that every cool guy you know will have a pair due to said affordability. Our advice? Hop on this trend early and hate on everyone who buys a pair after you do. (End)

More from Compass in Vegas. Today a few looks from the Sperry Spring/Summer 2010 collection. The boat/deck shoe movement continues to remain strong in the market. In some regard, it would seem that the economy may be laying a factor here as the trend remains locked on a footwear silhouette which is well priced and durable. At least the materials keep the style fresh and effective. Be sure to check the trainer in the mix as well.

We know we’re partly responsible for the shift in the speed at which fashion works, but it feels like only yesterday we were featuring this shoe at Bread & Butter. Now it’s officially in store and, given the relatively reasonable price, it won’t be there for long.

If you’re the type who likes to be pretentious, you’ll be glad to know that the colour on these are called ‘cracked champagne’. Not grey suede, ‘cracked champagne’. The cost is £181/€213/$306, a pretty reasonable price for Band of Outsiders and you’ll be sure to find a pair that fit, unlike their ridiculously slim fit shirts. (Tres Bien)

We know, we know – more deck shoes. While last year they were seen as fresh, this year a lot of people seem to have tired of them. We’re not one of those people. In summer, they’re just the most appropriate shoe to wear when your not wearing out your springcourts. It seems like everyone’s got at least one pair of Sperrys, but we don’t think many will be rocking the green suede versions. Get it from Farfetch.

This brilliant Sperry Top-Sider Leather Striper Shoe maybe a Japan exclusive seeing as we cannot find a hint of it online outside of the Japanese language players. The top is crafted in black leather and is simply on point. The vulcanized outsole is fused nicely to the leather upper. We’d love to get our hands on this Striper. Find it now at Hunky Dory.
