JUVENTUS AWAY 5 LO 540x405 Juventus 2011/2012 Away by Nike

Pink, Juventus’ original home color before the switch to black and white stripe, returns for the Turin club’s away matches in 2011/2012. Juventus has hit or miss success with their pink strips – the BBC calling a mid-90s version one of “the worst football kits of all time.” The contemporary style features a bold black star, and is delightfully aggressive in overall aesthetic. Made, like all new Nike football shirts, of 100% recycled polyester.

More looks at the new pink Juventus shirt after the jump.

Everton FC 2011/2012 Home Kit by Le Coq Sportif

everton 01 selectism Everton FC 2011/2012 Home Kit by Le Coq Sportif

The camouflage trend officially died on July 4, 2011.

No, Mark McNairy hasn’t gone overboard with an audacious assault on traditional English footwear.*

Instead, Everton FC has chosen to dress the club’s American goalkeeper – Tim Howard – in this number for the 2011/2012 home stand. He certainly won’t blend into the teams bright blue strip, nor is he likely to match anyone in the opposing side. Everton has posted the original brief for the new home kit here. Note that there is no mention of or directive given for the goalies garb. Let this be a lesson to all sporting franchises – a #fail only equaled by Minnesotans agreeing that “Wild” is a decent name for a hockey team.

*Only joking McNairy. We love you.

“Tennis Fashion” Book

tennis fashion 01 selectism Tennis Fashion Book

New from Assouline, Diane Elisabeth Poirier’s Tennis Fashion Tennis Fashion Book shares the cultural and societal impact of on court fashions through history.

Looking at the fashion of tennis is like opening a window into culture and society. Tennis is the second most popular sport in the West, and over the last century it has become, more than any other, an important part of our society and culture. The remarkable impact of tennis is apparent in the record number of fans and spectators the sport has attracted in the thirty years since major tournaments have been broadcast live on radio and TV. As tennis comes of age with yet another museum devoted to it in Paris (inaugurated at Roland-Garros during the May 2003 championship), this journey through the history of tennis fashions sheds new light on the top sporting events of the 20th century, on the lifestyles that tennis brought into being and turns the spotlight on the most charismatic champions and the way they have influenced the fashions of their time.

The book features 60 images over 80 pages, and is being sold at the very reasonable price of $25.00.

selectism - Umbro for Nottingham Forest 2011/2012 Home

Nottingham Forest will be dressed in this smooth number as the club attempts to progress out of the Championship during the 2011/2012 season. Tailored by Umbro, the red kit with white collar benefits (in our eyes) from the rather absurd sponsor emblazoned across the front. Can’t quite put a finger on why we like it… but, hey, we do. Is it the appointment of Steve McClaren as manager?

curated mag - London 2012 Olympic Torch

Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, both based in East London, are responsible for the design of the 2012 Olympic Torch. Taken into account the 8,000 individual torchbearers and their respective communities, the design features 8,000 circles representing all the stories that make up the charge to the Olympic Games. While the base idea is quite simple, it is achieved with great grace.

selectism - K-Swiss California Running Collection

With a heady mix of prep school classics, K-Swiss‘ California Running collection continues the brand’s vintage inspired offerings designed Brendon Babenzien. Our favorite pieces include the Boathouse inspired crew jacket and the tab t-shirts… prep school classics that haven’t yet been beaten to death. There are some terrific tanks in the mix too.

California Running is Babenzien’s second collection for K-Swiss. Look for a third, and final, this coming Fall.

selectism - The Rules of Association Football, 1863: The First FA Rule Book

A blinder of a book, complete with foreward by Sir Bobby Charlton, The Rules of Association Football, 1863 The Rules of Association Football, 1863: The First FA Rule Book stands, arguably, as one of the world’s most important publications. It’s been available in this current print for some time (as in 2006, for the world cup and as one of “The 12 Books that Changed the World”), however it is never too late to remind of the simple honesty and character the beautiful game possesses. With 14 clear rules, the FA established the backbone of the English game… and with these rules gave firm rise to the game’s future.

Legendary broadcaster Melvyn Bragg provides the historic introduction.

Ebbets Field Flannels Hockey Jerseys

selectism - Ebbets Field Flannels Hockey Jerseys

Complementing a tremendous range of baseball apparel, Ebbets Field Flannels now offers a range of real hockey sweaters.

As expected, the sweaters capture the blood, sweat and tears of forgotten teams. The Seattle Totems, represented in a shirt from 1966, of the Western Hockey League are one example. The nine-time Calder Cup winning Cleveland Barons are notable for the largess of owner Al Sutphin, who offered such generous salaries that many players chose to suit up in Northern Ohio rather than test the waters of the NHL. Great stories, through great garments. It’s the Ebbets way, and it is the basis for this new collection of hockey jerseys.

A few more of our personal favorites follow after the jump.
