"Early Color: Second Edition" Book by Saul Leiter

If you’re still looking for a Christmas gift then (a) what’s wrong with you? Get a move on and (b) this book is a good choice for the person who’s difficult to buy for. You know that person, the one who indulges their every whim, making it impossible to buy a gift for them come Christmas time. This should satisfy them. And if they already have it then tell them they should stop being so difficult, that you spent ages finding this book on abebooks and that they should just appreciate the bloody gesture.

That outburst is sure to make for a chilled out Christmas. Published by Steidl. (First edition available here Early Color: Second Edition Book by Saul Leiter)

heres your irony back book Heres Your Irony Back (The Big Picture) Book by Raymond Pettibon

Previously an exhibition back in 2006, Here’s Your Irony Back is a collection of Raymond Pettibon’s politically focused drawings. It’s not out until January so it wouldn’t work as a christmas gift. The other reason it might not work as a gift is because the drawings were inspired by September 11th, which isn’t exactly yuletide fare. Coming back to print soon from Steidl.

Selectism - henry-wessel-waikiki-01

Capturing one of Honolulu’s most famous neighbourhoods, Waikiki Henry Wessels Waikiki Book is the photography book by Henry Wessel. The blurb says it ‘explores the contradictions of Waikiki – concrete hotels invading pristine beaches, culture encroaching on nature.’ We’d like to agree with that – although we do just like the pretty pictures. Look for its influence when the next round of spring lookbooks appear. Out on Steidl. Available from Amazon Henry Wessels Waikiki Book.

Selectism - annabel-elston-somewhere-else-01

We try and stay away from overly wordy wannabe reviews here but there’s something about Annabel Elston’s photography that’s rather haunting. Or, as her blurb for Somewhere Else Annabel Elston Somewhere Else Photography Book says, ‘The ability to recognize and identify the joy or disenchantment of others prepares the street photographer to shape a picture.’ Published by Steidl.

Available from Amazon Annabel Elston Somewhere Else Photography Book.

Selectism - Neverland-lost-01

Here’s a book that passed us by when it first came out. Neverland Lost Neverland Lost is Henry Leutwyler’s book about a raft of Michael Jackson artifacts removed from his Neverland ranch. The usual suspects all show up in the book – the gloves and all that – but it’s still fascinating to see up close.

The book is available from Steidl and Amazon Neverland Lost.

Selectism - lead-belly-life-pictures-book-01

One man who could’ve done with writing an autobiography was famed blues musician, Leadbelly. His life was certainly worthy of that (check the wiki for a short overview) but for now we’ll make do with this picture retrospective, which includes many never seen before shots from his wife’s personal collection.

It’s available to purchase at Steidl and Amazon Leadbelly: A Life in Pictures.

The show will be on display through December 10, 2010, and debuts in conjunction with the launch of In Between¸ a book published by Steidldangin and edited by Shelly Verthime.

The exhibition includes over 30 exquisite prints of vintage black and white images. Guy Bourdin’s first retrospective was staged at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 2003. Jacob Holdt Photographers Gallery Exhibition

selectism - jacob-holdt-american-pictures-01

Photographer Jacob Holdt is renowned for his honest and raw capturing of every side of American society. Capturing a side of America that wasn’t being captured at the time, he sought to show every side of America – from KKK meetings to high society functions. Now a selection of his prints are available for sale from the photographer’s gallery . At £500 a pop, anyone with a few spaire coins should be itching to get their hands on these. Just look at the (we presume) family in the picture – they’ve got more collective style than a million men’s style bloggers (Ourselves included – save the salty comments for another day).
