These shades from RAEN were designed in conjunction with Warren Smith, an industry vet whose book Modern Optical Engineering was originally published in 1966 but continues to hold influence. Taking these in, we can see why. The vintage shape of RAEN’s Squire frame is buoyed into timelessness here by the sweet translucent bone acetate. Our eyes keep returning to that cool metal-rimmed hole at the back of the left-hand ear-piece, however. Seems like it would be murder on the Optics by Carl Zeiss lenses, but I guess these would look good on a key chain. Bonus: the price is proper; available online.

The above shades from Thom Browne’s Autumn/Winter 2012 men’s collection are a rather aggressive specimen. It would be difficult to put them on and not be affected by their BMX brat leather side cups or those arms that wrap back around your ear, putting notions of flashy adventure in your ear. Damn, this is some really strong coffee.

Continuing a relationship with Dita that remains very fruitful indeed, this collection brags two distinct looks: the jazzy number we just talked about and a more reserved and elegant aviator. We are most intrigued by the women’s frames pictured below, however. Nice round tortoiseshell specs that look fit for the man who loosens his tie a bit and calmly talks his friend in the wild goggles down out of a tree with a “Now see here, old boy …”

Cutler & Gross is tapped once again by the House of Margiela to co-create their 2012 sunglasses collection – clearly their earlier collection did them right. A bunch of great reinterpretations of classic “found” frames in the offering including acetate plays on the aviator frame, spectacle-lover shades, and more. Available from Eyegoodies.

As we have previously noted, Rick Owens is practically a god in the realm of Black Metal Serfwear. This means he likely sits on a throne of goat skulls that hovers high above on an ashen cloud, gnawing peppered jerky made from the flesh of his worshipers. It must be awfully bright up there, so close to the sun, and the man needs a pair of cover-all sunglasses.

Here, he imparts this eye wear to you. These are perhaps a little too bold and tech for most serfs, but those who are willing to take a leap of faith with the dark ruler will be duly rewarded with an small but very noticeable streak of his power. People will stop and ask you where you got your glasses on the regular. You will just grunt in response. Ssense has them.

Oliver Peoples not only relaunch their website, but for the occasion also presents their next short film for their Spring 2012 Collection. The LA eyewear brand continues to work with photographer and director Lisa Eisner on their moving picture projects. This season they recruited actors Dakota Johnson and Thomas McDonell for the short film, which once again has a fantastic mood and attitude.

Very French Gangsters’ photo campaign to bring awareness to their new collection of eyewear for children ages three to ten is excellent. Cute is probably the better word but we’ll avoid in light of the rough side shots. The eyewear itself looks great on the kids. Parents of Lilsnobs will certainly find strong options from this new start-up. Absolutely wonderful gifts for the little people in your lives.

The new ELEKTRA and PHINEAS models from MYKITA mark the brand’s exploration of “colors, materials, lasers and new print technologies” with designer Kostas Murkudis. The Berlin-based designer turns out crisp futuristic clothes with a uniformed vibe so it makes good sense that these shades would look right at home in New New York 2048.

“The juxtaposed geometric structures were the source of inspiration for the design [and] the surfaces of the glasses were covered with a mesh-like structure that was etched into the stainless steel frames,” we are told. The process yields an eye-catching lightweight metal frame holding tear-shaped lenses that are gripped below by a fine wire. Sublimely subtle.

Burberry returns with a new series of aviator frames – part of their Spring/Summer 2012 offering. The “ultra” lightweight frames feature metal temples with a Burberry check pattern on the in side. Men’s colors include: pale gold, matte black, nickel, dark nickel. Available online and through Burberry shops.
