Litton Furniture by Sir Terrence Conran

conran litton furniture front Litton Furniture by Sir Terrence Conran

Born in 1962 in Dorset, Litton Furniture was purchased by the venerable Sir Terrence Conran in 2007. Together with furniture maker Sean Sutcliffe, Conran’s intent is to use Litton as a spring board to restate the grand English furniture making tradition. The stylings are contemporary, and Conran’s portion of the collection is simple and based on clean lines. Tables, sofas and the Mon Oncle Chair (seen above) are among the designs available. Litton, aside from its lofty ambitions to uplift British furniture making, only uses local woods quelled from sustainable sources.

Based in East London, TNA Design Studio specializes in furniture, lighting and electrical product. Their “Cross Table” has the obvious religious tinge, but the agnostic among us can probably get around that for the practical storage applications. These were designed for Japan’s Sumitomo Bakelite and Trunk.

SwiTCH Table and Chair by Ellen Ectors

switch table chair ellen ectors front SwiTCH Table and Chair by Ellen Ectors

In Colonial America, the chair table was a piece of furniture born mostly out of necessity and cramped living quarters. There wasn’t a whole lot going on in terms of decorative flourish, or even thought given to reducing weight for that matter. They were simple. The back rotated over the seat and arm rests, on a hinge, to create the table top. Quick movement and BAM! dinner served.

In reality, it wasn’t quite that simple, though the general notion of a chair table remains pretty basic. Ellen Ectors manages, rather impressively, to make it fun as well. Her SwiTHCH table and Chair may remind some of the glory of a goal. Others, children’s play areas. But, deep down it serves a function without bowing to the norms. As table it is more graceful, but in both set ups, the design generates some excitement.

Gehry Table

selectsim - gehry table

Architect Frank Gehry is best known for buildings cloaked in sculptural metal. The Guggenhiem Bilbao; the Gehry Tower in Hanover, Germany; and LA’s Walt DisneyConcert Hall are among the famed creations. Aside from buildings, Gehry has also designed furniture.

This table, made of corrugated cardboard with a glass top, is one of Gehry’s creations. First produced in 1973, the table is getting renewed interest, and is almost as interesting an experiment of material as Frank’s use of metal on buildings. (Ok, that is not completely true, the buildings are inherently more interesting, but using cardboard structurally is also pretty cool). At the end of the day, it is a a pretty robust piece and will stand up to years of abuse.
