The Hill-side "Dia De Los Muertos" Papel Picado Print Pocket Squares

The Day of the Dead is celebrated through pocket squares coming from the Brooklyn outfit, The Hill-side. We’ll let them describe them: “The traditional folk art of papel picado (literally “perforated paper”) is a highly-detailed technique of hand-cutting thin paper to form elaborate designs. Papel picado is used mainly for celebrations surrounding the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos (”Day of the Dead”).” Well done and available now.

The Hill-Side Autumn/Winter 2011 Looks

Mikael Kennedy was tapped to photograph the experience of the The Hill-Side neckwear brand for their Autumn/Winter 2011 run. The campaign looks, which runs from neckties to scarves, feature a slew of familiar faces. As they mention: “We handed off the new collection of ties, scarves, and handkerchiefs to Mikael so he could carry it with him as he traveled around the country photographing friends and new people who crossed his path…”

A truly well done campaign from The Hill-side.

The Hill-Side released this short video preview of their upcoming collection and we’ve gotta say, it looks pretty good. We would make a joke, but people didn’t react very well the last time we did that in a Hill-Side post.

Selectism - The Hill-Side Autumn/Winter 2010 Lookbook

Photo booth imagery makes up The Hill-Side’s Autumn 2010 lookbook. We can properly assume that the cast of characters helping to showcase the forthcoming collection from the brand were all friends. We see a few familiar faces in there. Nevertheless, they do a wonderful job of placing neckwear against a variety of people and looks. A fun shoot.

Many more looks inside the The Hill-Side Autumn/Winter 2010 lookbook after the click.

Secret Forts | The Hill Side Q&A

03 May 2010, 10.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

Selectism - hill-side-qa
Secret Forts has a great Q&A with the brothers from The Hill-Side. Covering their recent studio move, their fabrics and their relatively quick start. On the latter Emil had this to say:

‘To date every aspect of The Hill-Side’s development has exceeded our expectations. When we first started making these ties we thought we might sell a few of them to very niche shops, mostly denim-centric places. It’s not like we invented anything really new, but it does feel surprising that our stuff has been as widely accepted and appreciated as it has. The whole thing has kept us so busy that we haven’t really had time to look up from what we’re doing long enough to take it all in. Now the challenge is to keep up the momentum, but also to manage our growth and expansion so that the brand doesn’t burn out. We need to continue to innovate and keep people excited about our products. This comes in to play in so many ways, from hunting for new fabrics, to introducing new designs, to how we photograph and style the products, to seeking out collaborators, to the shops we choose to partner with.’

The Hill-Side Camouflage Tie

selectism - The-Hill-Side-Camo-Tie

Here’s an early morning confession – we don’t wear ties often (we’re currently waiting for the presses to stop after that bombshell). It’s not that we don’t like ties, we buy them on occasion and all, but there’s something just a bit too prim and proper about a tie. If we did wear ties, we’d probably start with getting our hands on this one. What makes this tie is the camo pattern, which rids it of the preppy properness (if that’s a word) that plagues most ties. It might even get us wearing ties again. (Context)

Can bloggers get any bigger than they are right now? Putting all that cheesy #believe2010 nonsense aside, It’s definitely their year to shine. The Hill-Side’s SS10 look book is jam packed with bloggers, with everyone from one half of Street Etiquette to Allplaidout making an appearance. On the product side there’s bandanas in the mix now as well as the usual array of handsome ties, handkerchiefs and scarves.

After the leap is an interview with the brand and a look at the collection.
