Tokyo’s CLASKA hotel has invited 14 designers from the UK to produce posters based on their experiences with the city and with Japan. The results were shown on site during an exhibition held last December. Wallpaper* has an intriguing slide show related to the event, most interest because of the detailed images of the poster making process.

November’s issue of Wallpaper* is blazing good. With its subscriber only Alan Aldridge cover, to “The Retail Directory 2008″ which treats readers (print and online) to a compendium of design driven retail outlets from the Lanvin London, Alife Tokyo, to No 74 in Berlin.

Two shops not listed in the directory but clearly are Wallpaper* “approved” are the new Raf Simons‘ retail locales in Tokyo and Osaka. They happen to be Simons’ first flagship stores (almost hard to believe). As Wallpaper* describes them, “The Belgian menswear designer, known for his young, tailored aesthetic, turned to acclaimed international artists Sterling Ruby and Roger Hiorns to create two thoroughly unique retail experiences.” Read it all at Wallpaper*.

Most of you should know by now that we are fans of Tyler Brulé’s Monocle magazine. The November issue has just been released and once again it is on point. From stories on the new Ace Hotel New York to choosing food spots in Toyko with APC’s Jean Touitou, there is a lot of good stuff in the new issue.

The highlight though, its the Monocle x Louis Vuitton Tokyo City guide. Celebrating the launch of the official Louis Vuitton Tokyo City Guide, Monocel got together with Louis Vuitton Japan and created a poster edition of the guide. Not only does it give you the latest hotspot hotels and restaurants, you also get a piece of artwork by Leiji Matsumoto.

Have a further look at the guide after the jump.

Comme Des Garcons x Louis Vuitton | Comme Des Vuitton

highsnobiety - comme des garcons x louis vuitton

Two outstanding brands that we report about on a regular have decided to join forces later this year – Comme des Garcons and Louis Vuitton. After the announcement of the Comme des Garcons x H&M partnership, this is the second unexpected partnership by the Japanese brand this year.

"In an extraordinary collaboration, Louis Vuitton, the ultimate French luxury brand, and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, the ultimate fashion rebel, will open a joint Tokyo store in September — an ephemeral three-month space where six one-off bags, designed by Kawakubo in LV monogram pattern, can be ordered by shoppers.

Yves Carcelle, chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton, sitting front row at Kawakubos’ show on Friday, said that he was approached by Comme and considers the project a fine way to celebrate 30 years since Vuitton first opened in Tokyo.

For Comme acolytes, this move will be considered either as sleeping with the enemy — or a brilliant and imaginative partnership.

Kawakubo has re-designed the entire Comme des Garçons store on Kottodori, Omotesando for the Vuitton project. Carcelle says that LV is investing in the store, and that any financial profits will be divided.

Kawakubo described her designs as ‘party’ bags, promising multi-handles or two handles morphing into one. All will use the Monogram toile, with the LV initials, and the offerings will hark back to the styles of 30 years when Vuitton made only bags and leather goods." Via The Moment.

Chrome Hearts Tokyo Flagship Store

chrome hearts tokyo flagship store - selectism

Last year we visited for the first time the Chrome Heart Los Angeles flagship store and it was an impressive experience. The store was located in a stand-alone house, slightly hidden, at the same time located in one of the busiest shopping streets of LA.

They managed to achieve the same environment with their new Tokyo flagship store. The amount of details are stunning, from wall mountains, custom wooden furniture to the bubble gum machine, every piece carries the Chrome Hearts logo. The environment is really relaxed and calm, something that you would not expect from a city like Tokyo. Images via Openers.

Have a detailed look at the new store after the jump and make sure to put it on your list of must-see stores on your next Tokyo trip.

MOMA Store Tokyo Opens

26 December 2007, 17.44 | Posted in stores | No comments »

MOMA Store TokyoThe MOMA stores in NYC have always been special and an adventure to lurk through. On every trip to the big Apple its a must see, because most likely you will come across the most interesting new design objects from around the globe. The mix is what really makes it special in the end. Because they carry both the big shot designers, and somebody totally unknown that just had a good idea.

After operating 3 stores in New York, they have now finally expanded outside the US and opened their first overseas store. Where else but Tokyo could it have been (via The Japan Times). Apparently its a collaboration with electronics brand Sanyo.

We are happy to see this happening, it gives us hope, that Europe will maybe also get one any time soon!

LOCATION:

GYRE Shopping Complex
