edc keychain 01 The EDC Tool Kit

Kauffman Mercantile wants us to be ready for every eventuality while we’re on the go. They offer us the EDC kit, Every Day Carry, a selection of miniature keychain tools to deal with the unexpected and make us feel like problem solving, useful individuals. In essence this is a less knife orientated Swiss Army situation which includes a pry bar, a selection of screwdrivers, a waterproof lighter and for stray hair emergencies – precision tweezers. It looks pretty smart too. Time to get handy.

Selectism - Best Made Co. Chopping Axes

How I didnt hook up with the BNTL crew while in London is beyond me, but they continue to find some top notch product (every once in a while). Take these axes from Best Made Co. As they put it, “A Best Made axe is a best made axe… Hand painted and polished 30″ hickory helve with a 3.5 lb fine grain steel bit. Each Famous axe comes with an embroidered badge: only available with the purchase of a Famous axe. A Best Made axe is a best made axe. Each one of our axes are crafted, painted and polished by hand and made to order. Please note that depending on demand, delivery times for all orders vary.” How should I categorize these? Ah yes – Accessories.

Bosch 14.4 Compact Tough Power Drill

Selectism - Bosch 14.4 Compact Tough Powerdrill

This is a serious post. I purchased my first Bosch 14.4v compact power drill Bosch 14.4 Compact Tough Power Drill while rehabbing a house back in 2004. For the size and price, nothing will beat nor outlasts this drill in getting things done. It is my favorite power tool – hands down.

About a month ago I lost my Bosch drill. I am pretty certain it was lost in a major car accident I had. Vehicle was a total loss. I could have gone out and bought any other drill, but this Bosch had treated me so well, that I felt no need to acquire any other make nor model. Today it arrived. While it may not be made in Mexico any longer (now in Malaysia), and it includes a massive new charger,  it is still worth every last dollar I spent on it. High recommended on this pre Turkey Day. A real man’s holiday gift. Serious business. Amazon Bosch 14.4 Compact Tough Power Drill has it for 149$US.

The Disstonian Institute | A History of Disston Saws

selectism - The Disstonian Institute | A History of Disston Saws

Fell upon the Disstonian Institute over the weekend, and subsequently spent much of next few days trolling through its pages. Few websites are so dedicated and comprehensive in their coverage of a single manufacturer, in this case Disston Saws. Disston’s history begins in the 1840s, when Henry Disston was freed at age 21 from his apprenticeship to saw makers William and Charles Johnson (by way of bankruptcy). The following years found Henry suffering set backs (like being swindled by a fraudulent landlord), but did not deter the man. Fires burned down his factories three times before 1850. Still, in 1855 he became the only saw manufacturer to make his own steel.

The resolve of its founder and superior quality of product made Disston the largest selling saw in America during the first half of the 20th-century. Success leads to a good story, all of which is contained in the Disstonian Institute, covering saws, stamps, and even advertising. A great American tale, and one worth spending time working through.

Some selected advertisements and examples of Disston backsaws after the jump.

Pete Dungey “Alan Wrenches”

Through the folks at It’s Nice That, Pete Dungey’s “Alan Wrench” project is a good laugh. In 2009, Dungey set out to find out just who the most famous Alan is, and we’ll note these are English Alan’s. Happily Alan Partridge lands second. Then Dungey took the results and created some excellent functional objects. A whip through his own site is well worth the trouble.

Full view after the jump.

Brooks Tool Roll Bicycle Bags

brooks tool roll bag front Brooks Tool Roll Bicycle Bags

England’s finest (and maybe the world) leather saddle company offer some excellent gifts for the cyclists in your life. Our favorite being the Brooks Tool Roll Bag with its assortment of levers, spanners, allen wrenches (metric), screwdrivers, and more. Housed beautifully in either brown, honey, or black, the leather tool bag has not changed much since it first hit the market in 1914. Find it at all finer bicycle shops or Oi Polloi.
