Earlier on we should images of the Marc Newson designed lounge for Qantas in Sydney. Transferring his aesthetic from the ground to the sky, Newson has also worked on airplane interiors for Qantas’ A380s. IconEye discussed the work with Newson. The chat hits on what bothers Newson in the air and bringing glamor back to the aircraft.

Qantas Sydney First Lounge

What do you want prior to a long haul flight? A nice meal? A good bar? A spa treatment? All of these, and more, are possible at the Qantas Sydney First Lounge. The design is handled by Marc Newson, who has worked to create an international standard for pre-flight comfort. If the amenities don’t sooth, views over Sydney Harbor just might. (via ArchDaily).

Much nicer than the first class lounge in Dublin which only offers large amounts of stout, small packets of crisps, and black and white tv. (Just kidding, it was color).

The Yohji Yamamoto/Mandarina Duck line, Y’s Mandarina, showcases their Spring/Summer 2009 collection of business travel bags and luggage. Stepping away momentarily from the leathers of last Spring, the new line features canvas, neoprene, PVC, and polymide for shelling. Though, it should be noted that the “Backpack with Wheels” (above left) is made from cowhide. They just had to drop some leather, didn’t they?

Many more travel bags and luggage from the Y’S Mandarina Spring/Summer 2009 Collection after the jump.

Germaine Greer On Dubai

greer front Germaine Greer On Dubai

She’s not the only person to work an unsavory review of Dubai, but Germaine Greer is the latest. Her thoughts appear in today’s Guardian and have prompted some rather amusing responses. A synopsis of Greer’s assessment below.

From its artificial islands to its boring new skycraper, Dubai’s architecture is beyond crass.

Ecsotype Travel Bags

Yanko turned us onto this collection of men’s bags from Austrialia’s Ecsotype. Ecsotype was started by a couple who subscribe to the romantic idea of travel. “We associate the bags we have owned with the cities and countries we have lived in.” They clearly know what they’re doing as the stylings on their travel bags are some of the most forward we have seen in a time where the classics rule. Ecsotype Travel Bags look great and are all made in Australia. Having their production down under does limit their quantities but from where we stand, the pricing is still more than market friendly.

After the jump, be sure and check Ecsotypes variety of bag. We’re very fond of the Écosse, military duffle bag, and the School, which may be the best black leather duffle we have seen this season. Excellent work.

Selectism - Piquardo Convertible Bags in Milan

Italian travel and luggage company, Piquadro, and the “University of Florence School of Architecture collaborated to present 14 travel bag concepts developed by the 3rd year Industrial Design students. The objective was to meet the needs of the modern traveler who must move regularly for business on multiple modes of transport, and obviously for one who is not afraid of a bit of color.” (via core77)
