Maharishi Autumn/Winter 2012 – Preview

17 January 2012, 16.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

maharishi fall winter 2012 09 Maharishi Autumn/Winter 2012 Preview

Maharishi brings back their blues for Autumn/Winter 2012, in a collection that is sure to get people talking again about the U.K. based maker who does mil-spec inspirational clothing better than most. For those that have passed on Maharishi in recent season, we strongly urge you take a fresh look (and it goes beyond their camo).

In some regards, the collection may be seen as over-engineered, with garments that serve a multitude of functions including a pull-over weather proof coat that converts into a bag when zipped (photos do not do it justice), as well as bombers that go well beyond their design specs. But that is what will keep Maharishi garments around for as long as the classics that inspire them. This stuff is built for the end of the world. Think we’re excited? Check our gallery for everything.

Polo Ralph Lauren Trench Coat

08 December 2011, 12.00 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

polo rl trench 01 Polo Ralph Lauren Trench Coat

Polo Ralph Lauren bring us this classic single breasted trench. Hidden button placket front, single vent, slant pockets, this one comes with a waist belt making the whole thing feel a lot smarter. The fabric is described as ‘medium weight cotton canvas’ which means you’ll probably want to layer up underneath. As much as we love the double breasted variety they’re not the easiest styles to wear. If you’re going to take your cue from a detective on this one we’d say Columbo rather than the Pink Panther. Find it at Nitty Gritty.

Dredgers Union Autumn/Winter 2012 Outerwear

Cleveland’s Dredgers Union delivers a small collection of outwear for the 2011 cold seasons. Keeping their production in the United States has always been an important aspect of the line, which sells direct to customers through their online shop. This has helped them keep their price-points in check while offering quality-made goods. Nothing too out of the ordinary with the collection – you’ll find a selection of solid choices including a melton wool trooper jacket, waxed cotton “H” jacket with quilted liner and more.

Bleu De Paname Trench Coat

Selectism - bleu-de-paname-trench-coat-01

BDP (not to be confused with the rap group) have been making moves in silence and violence for a while now, both in terms of stockists and collections. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first time they’ve been stocked at Opening Ceremony and they’ve done so with a trench coat, something we’ve never seen from the company before. We’re all about the contrast cord shawl collar. It’s a bit ’70s, but in the best way possible. Just leave the matching oversized collar shirt at home. (Opening Ceremony)

(capsule) Paris | One Nine Zero Six Reversible Trench Coat

Selectism - 1906-reversible-trenchcoat-01

One of the standout brands for us was new (but old) brand One Nine Zero Six. An old English brand, they’d previously been making rugby uniforms for school children before someone started using the factory to make clothes for adults. The clothes veer towards solid basics as opposed to heritage ‘classics’ and this reversible trench coat is a perfect example of the collection.

See the other side after the leap.

Melinda Gloss Waxed Trench Coat

Selectism - melinda-gloss-waxed-trench-coat-01

We’ve been all about the crushed leather button for a while now, so it should be of no surprise that we like this coat purely because of the button choice. If we were being cynical we’d say you’re better off just buying some buttons and putting them on an old trench; but we’re gonna assume that most aren’t fussy enough with their clothing to do this. Oh yeah, and it’s waxed – which is nice. (Studio Homme)

Vanishing Elephant Olivet Trench Coat

Felix Chan, Huw Bennett and Arran Russel are the men behind the Sydney based brand Vanishing Elephant. All three men have had a presence in Australia’s prestigious fashion industry. The “Olivet Trench Coat” is one example of their craftsmanship and design. “Making their mark with a classic aesthetic, each collection heralds a return to ‘gentelmanly’ style complete with woven shirts, tailored suits, elegant knitwear and Italian leather footwear.” The double-breasted four-button coat has a green plaid lining and includes the fastening belt to complete the trench. This coat is available at Tomorrowslaundry (gb)

Selectism - Burberry April Showers Collection Trenchcoats and Jackets

Burberry re-imagines their trenchcoats and jackets for the change of weather. Their “April Showers” collection for Spring 2010 features new colorways on their classic cuts. While the trenches are in focus right now, the stow away jackets have caught our eye. Their simple front finish and packability make them appealing for those days when weather changes like girlfriends. You’ll see them in the gallery.

Mihara Yasuhiro for Topman Trench Coat

09 March 2010, 14.30 | Posted in Fashion | 2 comments »

selectism - mihara-yasuhiro-topman-trench-coat

Despite having enough money to sip mo’ on a living room floor and play nintendo with Cease and Nino – A Biggie reference had to be shoehorned in somewhere today – Topman is still something of a dirty word amongst certain circles. While we’ve always maintained that their mainline range is overpriced for what it is, we’re still big fans of their collaborations.

Their latest trench project brings Mihara Yasuhiro (who falls into the ever widening ‘He’s Japanese so we like him’ bracket’) to play about with the traditional trench coat. The results are a dandy-esque coat that’s great for the guys who love looking sharp. (Topman)

Uniqlo +J Trench Coat

Selectism - Uniqlo-+j-olive-green-trench-coat

As you’ve probably seen from the abundance of LIFE archive images doing the blog rounds, a good trench will last you a lifetime. While we do like Uniqlo’s mainline version, we have a feeling that this +J version will last for a tad longer. The green colourway is a nice change from the usual beige and will help the next time you’re trying to get on the Sartorialist – unless everyone else reads this as well, then you’re back to square one.
