Jacket Required - Mark, Craig, Andrew

L-R: Mark Batista, Craig Ford, Andrew Parfitt

Time flies. Seems like just yesterday we were rooting through the offerings on display at Jacket Required’s first ever showing in London town. Craig Ford, Mark Batista and Andrew Parfitt have been working hard to step things up for this second outing. The brand list, now well over double in size, is still a select line up of labels, both British and from furtherfield, all of which represent their ethos of  ”quality of brand, diversity of offering and uniqueness of experience”. Our previous coverage is worth another look if you are just aquainting yourself with Jacket Required.

We asked the guys to give us their take on last season’s happening and look to  Jacket Required Autumn/Winter 2012 kicking of this Sunday at new venue, Victoria House in Bloomsbury. Brands old and new include; The Superior Labor, Filson, Bedwin and the Heartbreakers, Universal Works, Garbstore, Human Made, Sanders and many more tasty names. We will be bringing you more on how it all panned out. For now, click on.

Universal Works Burton Cord Jacket

 universal-works-burton-jacket-mens-01.jpg

Corduroy just seems to transcend trends. Deciding whether it’s ‘in’ or ‘out’ is pointless, corduroy doesn’t care. It’s been around forever and as long as there are country gents, university professors and dads it’ll continue to hold a special place in the fabric hall of fame. Universal Works are obvioulsy a fan, their Burton jacket is the perfect example of how to wear corduroy without looking stuffy. Fully lined with plenty of pockets this piece is a great starting point for anyone wishing to join Club Cord. Visit Nitty Gritty for more. -ld

Universal Works Claret Shirt

Selectism - universal-works-claret-shirt-01

We might be revealing our low rent roots here but claret always remind us of West Ham’s football kit – which in turn reminds us of ‘forever blowing bubbles’. What’s that got to do the shirt itself? Not much, but now you can have the same mental association between claret and West Ham that we have. (Goodhood)

We know what you’re thinking. A chunky cardigan? For July? Perfect! We know, we know. We’re so seasonally appropriate we can’t believe it ourselves half the time. And, all kidding aside, it’s a good sale pick  – one for the forward planners out there.  (Eleven)

Selectism - universal-works-chambray-jacket-01

Apologies to all you folks in sweltering heat right now. Actually, we’re not gonna go all Kurt Cobain because we’re selfish about our clothing picks. Are people over chambray now? We’re not sure. It’s hard to be over a fabric as nice and nondescript as chambray, even if everyone’s wearing it. And it’s on sale, so you won’t even be that far out of pocket. (Nitty Gritty)

Selectism - universal-works-spring-2012-03

Finishing off today’s Cap recap is Universal Works. It’s a nice and concise preview here (we don’t want to give too much away – otherwise what would you have to look forward to when it hits stores?) so we’ve focused on this bomber jacket, a chore coat and a two tone coat. All of which you see if you just click that ‘more’ button.

Q&A with David Keyte of Universal Works

Selectism - Q&A with David Keyte of Universal Works

Pursuitist (how do I pronounce that?) delivers a quick Q&A with Universal Works founder, David Keyte. When asked where the line resides in the market, “With someone like Oi Polloi, we are much more with our peers and like brands. But we also have some skate stores and some less fashion-type stores who buy the collection, as well as more tradition stores like Fenwick’s of Bond Street. We really love that, it’s well – universal!  Really our peers are anyone selling well-made, understated non-branded honest clothes for men. There are a few out there in the US, Scandinavia and, especially, Japan.”

For those looking for something more immediate from Universal Works, we bring you a look at their Autumn/Winter 2010 collection. For those that saw an early look of their Spring 2011 collection earlier in the month, you’ll be happy to know that the preceding seasons will not let you down. “Universal Works is the brainchild of David Keyte who started his adult life working in the coal mines of South Derbyshire. All the money Keyte earned working in the mines he spent on clothes, which eventually led him to get a job at the Paul Smith store in Nottingham.” (cstore)
