Selectism - universal-works-spring-2012-03

Finishing off today’s Cap recap is Universal Works. It’s a nice and concise preview here (we don’t want to give too much away – otherwise what would you have to look forward to when it hits stores?) so we’ve focused on this bomber jacket, a chore coat and a two tone coat. All of which you see if you just click that ‘more’ button.

Selectism - Q&A with David Keyte of Universal Works

Pursuitist (how do I pronounce that?) delivers a quick Q&A with Universal Works founder, David Keyte. When asked where the line resides in the market, “With someone like Oi Polloi, we are much more with our peers and like brands. But we also have some skate stores and some less fashion-type stores who buy the collection, as well as more tradition stores like Fenwick’s of Bond Street. We really love that, it’s well – universal!  Really our peers are anyone selling well-made, understated non-branded honest clothes for men. There are a few out there in the US, Scandinavia and, especially, Japan.”

For those looking for something more immediate from Universal Works, we bring you a look at their Autumn/Winter 2010 collection. For those that saw an early look of their Spring 2011 collection earlier in the month, you’ll be happy to know that the preceding seasons will not let you down. “Universal Works is the brainchild of David Keyte who started his adult life working in the coal mines of South Derbyshire. All the money Keyte earned working in the mines he spent on clothes, which eventually led him to get a job at the Paul Smith store in Nottingham.” (cstore)

Selectism - universal-works-spring-2011-01

Kicking off our capsule recap today is Universal Works, who always have great outerwear. Universal Works are gaining a rep for their outerwear and their new jackets show just why they’ve got the interwebz going crazy. Nothing’s overdone or overdesigned, but it’s an easy wardrobe filler. Aside from that, there’s an abundance of polkadot summer scarves, which looks to be the accessory of next summer.

Selectism - Universal Works Bridlington Shorts

These madras shorts should be worn by all. Consider them (or at least some madra) an important option for the season. “These Universal Works Bridlington Shorts are perfect high summer fare for the sartorially inclined sun lover. A bright and chunky patchwork ‘Madras’ style print with drawstring  and hidden button-fly, the company so well known for quality workwear inspired design take a more relaxed approach, without sacrificing an ounce on garment construction and durability.” Glassboutique has them.

Universal Works Bakers Jacket

selectism - Universal Works Bakers Jacket

I don’t think I have personally posted anything made of chambray… but here goes.

Universal Works Bakers Jacket undoubtedly falls into the “workwear” category. After all, it has antecedents elbow deep in dough. That said, it’s a nice nod to an often under appreciated trade (at least when fashion is concerned). I could harp on about the inherent quality of workwear, but that is beside the point. This is an attractive piece, with simple useful details… for instance, the double slot pocket. (glass boutique).

Universal Works Waxed Fell Jacket

Universal Works’ SS10 collection landed at Daniel Jenkins’ store last weekend and we felt it was only right that we highlight one of our favourite pieces from a stacked collection. If menswear was set into two camps (which it is) this would defintely be on the ’style’ side of the equation. Like most ’style’ pieces, it’s best suited for those who like to appreciate the finer details (or least like to pretend that they do). [Daniel Jenkins]

Detailed images are (where else?) after the leap.

The second part of our series focuses on David Keyte’s Universal Works. Keyte has worked with the likes of Paul Smith, Maharishi and Albam before he decided to launch his own line in 2008. We quizzed him about his process and his answer is after the leap.

Universal Works Spring/Summer 2010

06 October 2009, 17.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

selectism - universal-works-spring-2010-01

Universal Works sprinted out of the gates with their AW09 line – having your debut collection stocked at Oi Polloi is an impressive feat. So, it should be of no surprise to learn that founder David Keyte has years in the game, working with the likes of Paul Smith, Maharishi and Albam amongst others.

This spring/summer collection continues what Works are known for – great, clean, simple clothing. The lookbook may not have enough ‘wow’ for some people, but just about everything in here is an item that’s wearable, affordable and made in the UK. While there’s plenty to write home about in this collection, the main message is this: chambray is here to stay.

Universal Works Fair Isle Cardigan

13 August 2009, 10.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

selectism - universal-works-fair-isle-cardigan-01

We may be exposing our slightly grandad-ish tastes with this post, but we really like this fair isle cardigan. It may be a little too old school for some, but it’s right up our alley.

Our favourite thing about fair isle is that it’s one of those patterns that never really go out of fashion. Sure, it goes through its highs and lows in terms of popularity, but it never gets so trendy that it’ll fall out of fashion. Universal Works, a relatively new British workwear label, have created our favourite fair isle cardigan – mixing mustard and brown (with SL fave – brown buttons) into the pattern makes it much more interesting than the bog standard grey cardi. Just don’t be shocked if your granddad ‘borrows’ this. (Oi Polloi)

Detailed shots after that leap.
