That’s right… unicorn leather. The new Oi Polloi Clarks Wallabees use what is known as “unicorn leather” – “the name given to elk hides by the specialist tannery tasked with producing the raw materials.” Elk and deer hides are super supple and these Clarks will be no exception. Choose from two colorways – dijon and wasabi – both of which may be some of best we have seen in 2012 so far. The green hue (wasabi) elk leather on the Wallabee is impressive.

Clarks is ramping up for 2012 with a stash of initiatives and special releases. 2012 marks 40 years of their Desert Trek boot, which sees a re-issue in the original leathers used on the debut shoe. Two special make-ups are coming with the Velour brand, previewed earlier here (now with new images), as well as the usual fresh takes on the desert boot and Wallabee. Classics devotees, look away now. Cause, a new and exclusive addition to the brand list at Goodhood, have dared to update the Wallabee – and they’ve actually done a good job. We’ve personally never been crazy about the size of the sole on the original wallabee, so Cause’s trimming of the sole is right up our alley. And on a practicality note, the side zip makes them wearable on those long haul flights when you have to take your shoes off. (Goodhood)

We’re not a site usually known for leaking images of unreleased products but when we caught a glimpse of this NON-PRODUCTION sample Clarks Wallabee fashioned from Barbour fabrics… well how could we not show it. We caution you again – this is not in production and there are no plans for it to show up in your local shops. It is  pipe dream status with the interior patterned check, leather piping, and leather heel appliqué. We can only dream a little… (via frankthebutcher)

Mr. Schneier and Peskowitz over at men.style spotted these “Rusty Staples” Clarks Wallabees during the Patrik Ervell runway show on Monday. While we’re unclear if they’re a one off for the show or something more, we are certainly big fans of the Wallabees and would easily add them to my closet at least.  Too bad they were not “Rusty Nails” so that I could reference that great Moderat single.

The first thing that pops into our heads when wallabees are mentioned is the intro to Raekwon’s ‘Glaciers of Ice‘, when Ghostface talks about dip dying his clarks. The second thing is that these Adam Kimmel wallabees manage to make a wallabee/espadrille combo look clean and crispy. Essentially, these are wallabees made using the material that would be used in espadrille and they look all the better for it.
