Before the days of ‘Your name on a grain of rice” and ‘I heart…’ t-shirts, travellers collected souvenir labels. Attached to your oversized hard luggage, everyone knew where you’d spent your summers, meaning you didn’t even have to brag about it to your fellow passengers. Louis Vuitton’s nephew Gaston-Louis collected over 3,000 of them before his death in 1970. The company has recreated some prize examples for this boxset of 30 postcards, see more at LV. (Wallpaper)

Still one of my favorite monthly reads, Wallpaper* launches their new online/digital iPad edition with their Auguest 2011 “Handmade Issue.” Their new iPad edition carries all the content found in the print edition with the addition of behind the scenes videos, a specially commissioned soundtrack and more. Give it a go via the iTunes Store.

Timberland and Wallpaper* team with designer Martine Rose for an intelligent fusion of classic tailoring and sportswear influence. Rose combines Timberland’s ultra light mini ripstop with a high-tech nail-head micro canvas. The resulting jacket is the first piece from a collaboration that will continually pioneer new and original concepts whilst referencing the past.

Here is a bit of a preview of what Wallpaper* and Laser Sailboats has in store for Salon del Mobile in Milan later this year. The commissioned Marian Bantjes to work over this Laser sailboat in a “dazzle camo” print. As Bantje’s describes it, “I avoided the obvious of working with organic forms to go with the wind, water, etc., and instead work deliberately against those forms. I wanted to make something that was incredibly distinctive in the water, and which would disguise its speed and versatility.” (core77)

The “International” for Team Wallpaper* is one of a handful of bicycles that the magazine helped develop. Many international friends worked on the series. Shuichi Kusaka of US-Japanese operation Kinfolk built the frames. Coat in Portland, OR painted the frames while the custom saddles were made by the Brooks Saddle Co. Nivaldo de Lima worked on the custom bicycle bags for the one-offs. A great project overall.

For those who have had to remove old wallpaper from plaster, you probably swore up and down that you would never apply wallpaper. Admittedly, I am one of those people but after Design Milk posted their writeup on Lori Weitzner’s take on wallpaper, my opinion could very well change.  The wallpaper is made by weaving strips of shredded newsprint through a loom and finally backing it with paper for application. The looks is unique and one I would certainly consider applying them to my walls.

Wallpaper* has received some great press on their August “Handmade Edition” issue. In conjunction with the issue drop, the magazine worked with Brown’s founder, Jonathan Ellery and watchmaker, Bell & Ross on a limited edition timepiece.

“A conceptual spinning sculpture on the wrist” is how Ellery describes the watch. Telling the time requires mastering of its rotational rhythms, the explosive “big bang” motif comes together only twice in 24 hours as the circles rotate. This piece is based on the BR01-92 Radar model.
