Woolrich Woolen Mills Coats for Autumn/Winter 2011

Here’s a wide look at the coats and jackets from the forthcoming Woolrich Woolen Mills Autumn 2011 collection. Mark McNairy takes the reigns at WWM and looks to expand on the already strong connection to outdoor wear and military. As he told us back in Las Vegas this Summer, he also looks to pull from the 60’s “prep” market which Woolrich worked in.”  Congrats to Mr. McNairy. (cs)

Woolrich Woolen Mills Spring 2011 Looks

The lookbook for Spring 2011’s Woolrich Woolen Mills collection has arrived. From our runway preview: “This is of course Daiki Suzuki’s final collection for the line. His final call is a good one with the classic Americna brand being reworked – again – for a modern audience. Suzuki’s “influence lies in pioneering outdoor brands from the 1950’s to 80’s—companies like Holubar, Sierra Designs, Early Winters, Gerry and others, many of whom have long since ceased to exist. In particular, Daiki recalls being an avid rock climber during his high school years in the 1970’s, a decade that saw the birth of Gore-Tex, and other synthetic materials developed to answer every demand of rock climbers.”

Selectism - Woolrich Woolen Mills Spring 2011 Runway

Woolrich Woolen Mills delivers runway looks from Milan. This is of course Daiki Suzuki’s final collection for the line. In particular, Daiki recalls being an avid rock climber during his high school years in the 1970’s, a decade that saw the birth of Gore-Tex, and other synthetic materials developed to answer every demand of rock climbers. Though he was aware of the advancements in technical equipment, Daiki made do with the only gear available to him: heavy cotton canvas rucksacks, woolen climbing knickers, poly-cotton poplin shirts, corduroy hats, absorbent neck towels. His clothing had buttons and buttonholes, not snaps and multiple-zippered pockets.”

McNairy Takes over for Suzuki at Woolrich Woolen Mills

Selectism - Mark McNairy Takes over for Suzuki at Woolrich Woolen Mills

Mark McNairy is taking the creative reigns over at Woolrich Woolen Mills. Mr. McNairy, who is best known for his work at J. Press, and of course his own New Amsterdam collection, replaces Daiki Suzuki as creative director for the brand. His personal take on the line looks to pull from some WWM’s 50’s and 60’s sportwear collections.

“It’s not going to be red-and-black buffalo check — that I can tell you,” McNairy said. “I think I’ll end up adding a military aspect and some Ivy League. In the late Fifties and early Sixties, Woolrich had a sportswear collection that wasn’t necessarily geared for the outdoors and was more about the piece goods like Ivy League styles, duffle coats and things like that. It’s going to be a mixture of the things I love.”

Here at Selectism, we’re very excited to see what Mr. McNairy has in store for the Woolrich Woolen Mills collection. Congratulations.

Selectism - Woolrich Woolen Mills Autumn/Winter 2010

Some first looks from the Woolrich Woolen Mills Autumn/Winter 2010 presentation today in Milan. We give credit to Suzuki for calling out his bold inspirations. “Daiki Suzuki’s Fall/Winter 2010 Woolrich Woolen Mills line, is a parade of blacks and blues. Influenced by both the stark colors from late 1970’s and early 80’s designer labels like Comme des Garcons— an aesthetic he grew up with and learned much from—as well as his passion for Americana and Woolrich hunting plaids, Daiki Suzuki searched for a common ground and created a wholly new style that could be called ‘Dark Hunting’ or ‘Hunting Noir.’”

Woolrich Woolen Mills drives deeper into the American way with a focus on California’s surf heritage for their Spring/Summer 2010 collection. ”The Surfing sub culture embraced classic California clothing brands that  were originally designed for outdoor sports like camping and hiking. Some of the California brands were intended for Surfers themselves when they were off [their] boards…The key piece of the collection is the Carlsbad Jacket, inspired by vintage outdoor jackets of the 1960’s. The fabric is a water resistant durable cotton poly poplin that was considered the best fabric for the outdoors.”
